College Football Preview 2024: Iowa State Cyclones win projections, strengths and weaknesses, quarterback spotlight and more

Iowa State finished 2022 with a 4-8 record — head coach Matt Campbell’s second losing season with the Cyclones, and his first since his debut campaign. Iowa State got back on track in 2023, ending the year at 7-6. The expectation is that the Cyclones will be at least as good as they were last season with so many key players returning. They’ll need significant improvements from their offensive line and pass rush if they want to take a step forward, though.

Biggest Strength: Continuity

The 2024 version of Iowa State won’t look much different than this past season’s. The Cyclones returned 13 of their 14 most valuable players from 2023, according to PFF’s wins above average metric. With another year under all of their belts, Iowa State could take the next step.

Biggest Weakness: Offensive line

Even with all five starters from last season returning, the offensive line remains a serious question mark. That’s because the Cyclones finished 2023 with the Power Five’s lowest-graded offensive line and the second-lowest in the nation, posting just a 44.7 unit grade. They were also the lowest-graded line in the Power Five for both pass blocking (44.7) and run blocking (42.1).
