- ESPN’s Eric D. Williams is reporting that Chargers TE Hunter Henry should be the team's “main tight end” in 2017. Henry was drafted by the Chargers in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, and should take over a larger role in the offense from former All-Pro Antonio Gates.
- In 2016 Henry and Gates split work pretty evenly, with Gates totaling 585 snaps to Henry's 574. Gates will still be involved this season, especially in the red zone. He needs only one more touchdown to pass Tony Gonzalez for most TDs all time among tight ends.
- Henry has also shown a nose for the end zone, his eight touchdowns in 2016 tied for most in the NFL for tight ends with Cameron Brate. Henry's overall PFF grade of 78.7 ranked him 12th among TEs in 2016, and ahead of Gates who was 19th at 74.2.
- Of all tight ends that had at least 100 snaps in route in 2016, Henry finished sixth in yards per route run at 1.99. Gates ranked 24th in the same category at 1.41.
