Benson was the 66th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, and the second running back selected. He averaged only 10 carries per game at Florida State due to a heavy rotation of players at all positions. Benson also didn’t play much in the fourth quarter thanks to some blowout victories.

James Conner is Arizona's lead running back and is coming off a career year. The team already limits his snaps in passing situations with either Emari Demercado or Michael Carter, and that’s a situation Benson probably isn’t suited to take over. Benson may see single-digit snaps in several games early in the season. Conner could also endure significant regression while Benson is immediately an impact player, but odds are the Cardinals will continue to rely on one of the best runners in the league for another season.

Benson is typically the first running back off the board who is a clear backup, and for good reason. He is the clear handcuff to a running back who has never played a full season in a situation that should generally be good for 15-plus carries per game and potentially a touchdown or two. Don’t expect Benson to be anything more than a handcuff this season.
