He has played so well that his 92.6 PFF offensive grade over the last two seasons is the best for any running back regardless of sample size. His grade should decrease on more snaps, but it’s still been impressive what he’s accomplished when given the opportunity.

Kyle Shanahan has hinted that Mason could be the 49ers' No. 2 back this season for the 49ers. San Francisco spent a fourth-round pick on Isaac Guerendo, so it’s possible Mitchell doesn’t make the roster if the 49ers only keep three running backs. Most of the 49ers running backs have been dealing with injuries, so the preseason hasn’t given any indication how the backups will shake out.

Mason will only have fantasy value this season if there is an injury to Christian McCaffrey. There is certainly a chance Mason would need to rotate with Mitchell or Guerrendo, but there is also a chance he would at least have the early down role as other 49ers running backs have had in the past. Even without a lot of the receiving work McCaffrey gets, Mason could be a top-10 fantasy running back if McCaffrey is out. He is getting drafted at a point where it’s near-impossible to find someone with that high-end upside in an unlikely scenario.
