Edwards was one of the most effective rushers on a per-play basis before 2023. He averaged at least five yards per carry in his first four seasons with high rates of gaining first downs and making longer gains.
•
Despite the excellent efficiency, he’s rarely been a fantasy-relevant running back. He’s played more games with single-digit carries than double-digit carries. Over one-third of his career double-digit carry games occurred in 2023, which caused less efficiency. Volume is more important than efficiency for fantasy football, so he still finished at RB25. The bigger problem is his receiving ability. He averages 0.5 receptions per game, which is awful for any running back you would consider in fantasy football, and specifically in 2023, it wasn’t much better at 0.7. He caught one pass for 80 yards last reason, which is why he doesn’t rank near the bottom of all receiving stats for running backs in 2023.
•
Edwards could be a fantasy starter if he can run the ball 15 times per game. A lot will depend on the offense and if he can convert some of those carries to touchdowns, as well as on J.K. Dobbins‘ health. His upside is very limited without receiving production, but he’s also pretty likely to finish ahead of his RB36 spot, assuming he stays healthy.
