If you are reading this you are likely in your leagues Super Bowl. The other (less exciting) option is you’re trying to win this last week so you don’t finish in last place. This week I am doing it a little differently. My “all starts” article is already up and running and this is article is “all sits”. All four matchups I am featuring in this article are going to favor the cornerback. These are guys that can lose you your title, or “win” you your last place trophy.
Josh Gordon vs. Bene Benwikere
It can’t get much worse for quarterback Johnny Manziel, right? Manziel had a disastrous first career start and it affected Josh Gordon and the rest of the offense. I have heard some people blaming the offensive line and poor receiver play, but that isn’t accurate. Manziel looked completely lost in the pocket and was late on almost every throw. You could see him panic every time his first read was taken away. When that first read wasn’t there he would pull the ball down, take his eyes off his receivers, and start to run around. I watched every throw he made and I’m not sure I saw him go through his progressions once. It looked like he was playing in his first organized football game ever. Gordon being on this list is a reflection on Manziel, not himself.
Bene Benwikere has lost some games this year due to injury, but while he’s been on the field he has played well. He has allowed just 243 yards on 43 targets and has yet to yield a touchdown. I like the potential of Benwikere, but he isn’t on this list because of his play. The Browns offense is such a mess he looks to benefit from their struggles.
Bottom Line: Manziel will have to prove me wrong. I didn’t get down on him after just this one game; I have been down on him since I started breaking down his college tape. I had many doubts about Manziel’s future success in the NFL, and he did nothing to make me change my mind in his first start. Until Manziel shows he can do things NFL quarterbacks have to do, I am staying away from the Browns offense… Gordon included.
