- Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien emphasized quarterback Tom Savage is the team’s starting quarterback according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Savage is competing with first-round draft pick Deshaun Watson for the starting job.
- Savage and Watson have graded comparably thus far in the preseason, with Savage (playing against first-team defenses) putting up overall grades of 66.9 and 72.0 versus the Panthers and the Patriots, respectively. Watson put up grades of 65.7 and 69.8. Watson’s grades, though, have been boosted a bit by his rushing ability, as he’s earned run grades of 80.0 or higher in both preseason games thus far.
- During this preseason, Savage has been more efficient with the ball than Watson, producing the 10th highest adjusted completion percentage at 85.0 compared to Watson’s 62.5. For Savage, this has held up while under pressure as well earning an adjusted completion percentage of 83.3 while under pressure.
