Signature Stat Spotlight: Quarterback Accuracy

  • After opening Sunday, Alex Smith leads all QBs in completion percentage adjusted for drops, throwaways etc. with 90.9 percent. Smith had two of his 35 pass attempts dropped, and threw another two away, meaning he was accurate on 30 of 33 attempts against the Patriots.
  • Matthew Stafford ranked second in his comeback win against the Cardinals, suffering from a league-high five dropped passes, which masked his accurate day passing. He also threw away three passes over the game. His drop rate of 12.2 percent actually did not lead the league this year, because…
  • Derek Carr had four dropped passes, but attempted nine fewer than Stafford to give him a drop rate of 12.5 percent. He threw away one pass over the game.
  • Josh McCown produced maybe the most surprising entry on this top five, with an adjusted completion rate of 81.1 percent. McCown, like Carr, also suffered from four dropped passes, threw one away, and saw one batted at the line, but attempted seven more passes than Carr did.
  • Tyrod Taylor may have the most interesting passing profile of anybody on this list. He attempted the fewest passes (28), had one dropped, but he also had two batted at the line, was hit once as he was throwing to cause an incompletion. Taylor was also arguably the most conservative passer on the list, throwing away four passes.
