Perine projected to take Kelley's starting job in Washington

Despite an impressive rookie season from Redskins RB Robert Kelley, ESPN Redskins reporter John Keim projects Samaje Perine as the team's starting running back, something in which PFF hinted at two weeks ago.

Kelley

  • In 2016, Kelley ranked 26th among running backs and earned a 71.0 overall grade as a rookie.
  • Kelley boasted the fourth highest elusive rating of 61.5. He forced 39 missed tackles on 180 total touches and averaged a robust 2.84 yards after contact, ranking 15th out of 53 backs with at least 80 carries.
  • As a rookie, Kelley struggled in pass protection and ranked 50th in pass block grading out of 59 eligible running backs. His pass block efficiency of 92.5 ranked 43rd.

Perine

  • From a pure production standpoint, Perine has been incredibly consistent and finished his career as Oklahoma’s all-time leading rusher.
  • Perine’s elusiveness and yards after contact has declined each season since his breakout 2014 year and despite his big frame, his 3.26 yards after contact ranked just 50th out of 116 Power 5 running backs that had at least 84 carries in 2016.
