Final Score

San Francisco 49ers 31, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17

San Francisco 49ers

Jimmy Garoppolo showed some rust in this one. He had inaccurate passes throughout the game and missed a couple of open receivers. His worst decision of the day led to a pick-six early in the game.

Rookie wide receiver Deebo Samuel showed some flashes that he could be a staple in the 49ers' offense. He showed off strong YAC ability in limited action, catching three passes for 17 yards and a two-point conversion.

DeForest Buckner had one of the worst games of his career against Tamp Bay. He struggled significantly against the run and left a lot to be desired rushing the passer.

New edge defender Dee Ford didn't do much against the run, but he starred as a pass-rusher, picking up multiple pressures along the way.

Rookie Takeaways

Nick Bosa recorded multiple pressures and made his presence felt in the run game.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Vita Vea didn't offer much as a pass-rusher, but he was a monster in the run game. He dominated the line of scrimmage and was a constant disruptor in the backfield. William Gholston also earned strong marks in run defense alongside Vea.

Vernon Hargreaves III and MJ Stewart both had better games than the score might indicate. Hargreaves had a quality pick-six early in the contest, and Stewart limited mistakes in coverage while standing out in run defense.

Guard Ali Marpet was one of the bigger bright spots in what was an overall ugly performance for the Bucs' offense.  Marpet was fantastic in pass protection and made a handful of impact blocks in the run game.

Second-year USC product Ronal Jones easily had the best game of his young NFL career running behind Marpet & Co. He forced multiple missed tackles on his way to a 13-carry, 75-yard performance.

Rookie Takeaways

Rookie off-ball linebacker Devin White had an unspectacular debut. He made little impact in run defense and gave up a handful of plays in coverage.
