- The Detroit Lions announced on Friday that they had waived/injured offensive tackle Greg Robinson. The move signals optimism regarding the status of second-year offensive tackle Taylor Decker, who is “close” to returning this Sunday according to Lions head coach Jim Caldwell.
- After being made the second overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, Robinson struggled in his first three years for the Rams. His pass blocking efficiency scores ranged between 93.5 and 94.0, never ranking higher than 36th among offensive tackles. Meanwhile, his PFF season grades never ranked outside the bottom 10 at his position.
- In June, the Lions traded for Robinson having lost starter Taylor Decker to a shoulder injury for the first half of 2017. Robinson started at left tackle for the first six games of the year, accumulating a career-worst 92.2 pass blocking efficiency before sustaining an ankle injury in a 52-38 loss to the New Orleans Saints.
- In the Lions’ two subsequent games, converted defensive lineman Brian Mihalik has filled in at left tackle, posting game grades of 38.7 and 54.7 against the Steelers and Packers. Detroit will be keen to see Decker return; he impressed as a rookie, ranking 25th among offensive tackles with a season grade of 80.7 last season.
