  • In an interview with the Akron Beacon Journal, hall of fame defensive end Bruce Smith has said that he wants to take number-one overall pick Myles Garrett under his wing. Smith said; “He's going to be successful, it’s just the level of success that he reaches could be contingent upon the decisions that are made for him at an early stage of his career. The advice, the coaching, the tutelage that he gets right now could determine whether he's an impact player in his first or second year or his fourth or fifth year.”
  • Garrett was taken number-one overall in the 2017 NFL draft after he finished in the top three among edge defenders in overall grade in all three years of college. His pass rush grade of 91.1 ranked fifth of 472 edge defenders in 2016, and his pass rush productivity of 13.5 ranked sixth of 33 4-3 defensive ends with 240 pass rush snaps.
  • Smith commented that in some instances, Garrett appeared slow off the ball. In 2016, he averaged 2.36 seconds to pressure, just slightly better than the NCAA average of 2.41 seconds.
