- In the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Giants selected TE Evan Engram from Ole Miss — who will play as an inline tight end.
- Early in free agency, New York inked Rhett Ellison to a four-year deal. Ellison played just 260 snaps for Minnesota in 2016 — 82.7 percent coming at TE, contrary to popular belief that he primarily played fullback.
- Throughout his career, Ellison has mainly been used as a blocker, staying in on run or passing plays 73.5 percent of the time. In 2016, Giants tight end Will Tye ranked 61st of 63 qualifying TEs with a run-blocking grade of 33.7.
- Engram should be used as a passing threat, replacing the most valuable piece of Tye’s game. Engram lead the 2017 TE draft class with 2.59 yards per route run.
- If the Giants only keep three TEs for the final 53-man roster, Tye could be on the bubble if he fails to beat out 2016 sixth-round pick Jerell Adams, who played 204 snaps as a rookie.
