- The Philadelphia Eagles announced via Twitter they are releasing former starting running back Ryan Mathews. Mathews, who suffered a serious neck injury in December, definitely wants to play in 2017, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Caplan.
- Mathews started eight games for the Eagles in 2016 and recorded a PFF overall grade of 70.5, equaling the lowest of his career, which came in his rookie year with the San Diego Chargers in 2010.
- Throughout his career, Mathews has consistently posted a solid PFF elusive rating (a runner's success beyond the point of being helped by his blockers) with a high in 2011 of 41.2, ranking 18th out of 56 eligible running backs, with 35 combined missed tackles during the season.
- Additionally, Mathews has also demonstrated an ability to make big plays during his career, especially in his time with the Eagles. He had 11 rushes of 15-plus yards in 2016, which culminated in a PFF breakaway percentage (showing runners earn the highest and lowest percentage of their yardage on big plays) of 35.1 percent, ranking 13th out of 53 running backs.
