Addition of Anderson should make for LB competition in Washington

at Bryant-Denny Stadium on September 13, 2014 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

  • Washington LB Ryan Kerrigan has finished in the top 10 among outside linebackers for sacks in all but one season (where he finished 12th). Likewise, he has finished in the top 10 among outside linebackers for pass-rush productivity in all but one season.
  • In 2016, he ranked fourth in pass-rush productivity and racked up 72 total pressures, ranking third. He was the 10th-highest-graded 3-4 OLB, with a grade of 82.2.
  • Trent Murphy played opposite Kerrigan in 2016 and enjoyed his best year as a pro. His pass-rush productivity of 11.8 ranked him seventh among 3-4 outside linebackers. He recorded 55 total pressures, which ranked 10th. He performed very well against the run, and his run-stop percentage of 6.3 percent ranked ninth among all outside linebackers. The Redskins will lose Murphy for the first four games of the 2017 season due to a PED suspension.
  • The next man up, Preston Smith, has struggled to make an impact as a pass-rusher, managing just 34 total pressures in 389 pass rush snaps. The coaching staff praise Smith’s obvious talent, but often remark on his lack of motivation. The addition in the draft could fuel him.
  • Second-round draft pick Ryan Anderson picked up a total of 129 pressures (22 sacks, 27 QB hits, 80 hurries) over his 703 pass rush attempts at Alabama. He created pressure on 18.3 percent of his rushes, which finished well above the NCAA average of 10.0 percent for an edge defender.
