Hey there football fans! We’re heading into Sunday coming off of a big weekend of cuts, trades, and all sorts of player movements. To keep up with all the cuts and signings elsewhere, check out our News page. Below, we’ll recap the biggest trades of the weekend as teams worked to set final rosters before Week 1.
As reported by Field Yates of ESPN, the New England Patriots have traded former third-round quarterback Jacoby Brissett to the Indianapolis Colts for former first-round wide receiver Phillip Dorsett.
Dorsett, known as a deep threat coming out of the University of Miami, was targeted deep 27 times his final college season and hauled in six deep touchdowns. But he’s only been even targeted deep 24 times in his NFL career thus far.
Brissett played in three games last season while Tom Brady served his four-game suspension and Jimmy Garappolo was injured. He played well when throwing short and early. His 73.7 completion percentage when throwing in 2.5 seconds or less led the team. And he had a passer rating of 103.5 when throwing within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage.
As reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Seattle Seahawks have traded edge defender Cassius Marsh to the New England Patriots for a fifth and seventh-round pick in 2018.
Marsh played a career high 36.2 percent of snaps in 2016, recording nine defensive stops in his 436 snaps.
The fourth-year defensive end recorded a pass-rush productivity, measures pressure on per snap basis with weighting towards sacks, of 8.5 with a career high 28 total pressures.
As reported by Ian Rappaport of NFL Network, the Pittsburgh Steelers have traded wide receiver Sammie Coates to the Cleveland Browns for a 2018 sixth-round pick, the same pick the Steelers traded the Browns to get Justin Gilbert in 2016.
Coates led the league in deep receptions (7) and deep receiving yards (321) with only two drops on nine catchable passes before injuring his finger in Week 5. After the injury, Coates dropped the only catchable deep pass thrown his way while playing 19.1 percent of the snaps from Week 6 on.
The former third-round pick’s 62.9 passer rating when targeted was the lowest among any Steelers wide receiver to catch a pass last season.
The Kansas City Chiefs traded defensive lineman David King to the Tennessee Titans on Friday, gaining a conditional 2018 in the process.
The Chiefs have spent much of this offseason, and this past week specifically, sending draft picks to other teams; trading a fourth- and fifth-round pick for Reggie Ragland and Cam Erving on Monday and Wednesday, respectively.
King, who earned a sack, a hit and a hurry to go along with five stops this preseason, figures to add depth behind Jurrell Casey (87.1 overall grade in 2016), Karl Klug (82.6), and DaQuan Jones (79.4) along Tennessee’s defensive front.
After signing former Browns cornerback Joe Haden, the Pittsburgh Steelers have traded cornerback Ross Cockrell to the New York Giants for a conditional 2018 draft pick, as reported by Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Cockrell played 97.8 percent of snaps last season as he started every game at cornerback. His 79.1 overall grade was second highest among the Steelers’ cornerbacks behind William Gay’s 82.9.
The 26-year-old cornerback played 633 coverage snaps last season, the most of any Steelers defender, and allowed the second-lowest passer rating when targeted with 90.0. But he was susceptible to the deep ball, allowing a 101.3 passer rating on go routes last season, the highest on the team.
