Hello football fans! Here are the five things you need to know from Saturday to start your day:
- After a breakout 2016 season, Denver Broncos outside linebacker Shane Ray will miss 6-8 weeks after a torn right wrist ligament. Ray put up a 49.2 grade as a 2015 rookie, but that jumped to 76.5 last year, and especially did well pass-rushing from the right side. In response to the injury, there are rumors the Broncos could look at signing veteran Dwight Freeney as a Ray replacement.
- Early reports out of Washington are that free agent signing D.J. Swearinger has impressed the team early in camp, drawing praise from head coach Jay Gruden and several of the team’s beat writers. Swearinger is coming off a big year in Arizona, where he notched a grade of 87.0, ninth-best among safeties.
- We have an early preseason trade. The Chiefs and Seahawks exchanged linebackers, with J. Alexander heading to Seattle and Kevin Pierre-Louis going to Kansas City. Alexander has been a Pro Bowler on special teams for the Chiefs, while Pierre-Louis has struggled a bit more as a defensive player. The two are seven days apart in age.
- There might not be a lot of fantasy intrigue with the New York Jets heading into 2017, but the team could offer some help at running back if either Bilal Powell or Matt Forte seizes the job and runs with it. PFF Fantasy’s Scott Barrett dives in on the battle between the two, and examines whether Powell did enough late in the 2016 season to be the team’s clear-cut No. 1 back.
- Fantasy values for dynasty players can be very different than those in single-season leagues. PFF Fantasy’s Michael Moore checks in on the dynasty values of some players who will have a lot said about them for single-season leagues this preseason. He shuts out that talk to look at the long-term value of Cam Newton, Carlos Hyde, Ameer Abdullah, Emmanuel Sanders, Josh Doctson, and Eric Ebron.
