Hey football fans! Here are five things you need to know from yesterday to start off your weekends:
- Which running backs were the leaders in PFF's signature stats? PFF's Bryson Vesnaver provided an analysis of the players who led the league last year in PFF's five signature stats for running backs. Some of the top players in each statistic are fairly surprising names, but none more so than Ty Montgomery.
- We had a double helping of Raider extension news. On the heels of the news of G Gabe Jackson's extension came the news that all-world defender Khalil Mack will have to wait for his own extension until next year. Jackson allowed zero sacks last year and played the most pass blocking snaps of any guard who can say that. Mack is under contract for two more seasons, so the Raiders have time to lock up one of the best defenders in the league.
- Continuing on the extension theme, LB Thomas Davis wants one. And if he had his way, he'd get one before training camp. Davis had a bit of a down year by his own standards and he is 34, but he was still the most productive 4-3 outside linebacker rushing the passer last year and is a well-respected member of the the team.
- Hall of Famer Bruce Smith wants to mentor Myles Garrett. Smith believes that the coaching and tutelage that he gets right now will determine just how quickly the young defender will become an impact player. Garrett was one of the most dominant players during his time in college, finishing in the top three among edge defenders in overall grade in all three years of his college career.
- Tyler Buecher would like you to stop drafting backup quarterbacks please. He argues that it's for your own good, as that roster spot is better used upon a high upside player who might breakout. With injuries, surprise promotions, and unexpected situations cropping up every single year in fantasy, our inability to successfully predict nearly half of the running backs and wide receivers that end up being fantasy starter material means that you should have as many lottery tickets on your bench as possible to begin the season.
