It was the Travis Kelce Show at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday Night Football, as the star tight end racked up a season-best 124 receiving yards to help the Kansas City Chiefs to a 19-18 win against the Denver Broncos.
Both teams got off to a slow and relatively sloppy start offensively, partly due to the heavy winds. But the Kelce-Patrick Mahomes connection soon started to take hold, with Kelce catching all seven of his targets for 109 yards and four first downs over the first 30 minutes to carry his team to a 10-0 lead at the half.
The Broncos managed to fight back a little in the second period, their lone score coming from an outstanding one-handed catch from Courtland Sutton in the back left corner of the end zone. However, the Chiefs kept churning and added two more field goals in the second half to maintain a lead Denver never really looked close to narrowing, despite what the final score says.
If there is any solace for Broncos fans, it will be the performance of the defense, which limited the dynamic Chiefs to just a touchdown and four field goals. Mahomes and company generated negative expected points added (EPA) per play and a season-low 5.1 yards per play tonight, which can be something of a consolation for Vance Joseph and his much-maligned squad.
Offensive spotlight: It was Travis Kelce‘s night tonight. The Chiefs star caught all nine of his targets for 124 yards and five first downs, with 41 of those yards coming after the catch. Three of his catches went for 15 or more yards, and he finished the game with an 80.0-plus receiving grade on first review.
Unfortunately, it was another disappointing night for quarterback Russell Wilson, who finished 13-of-22 for just 95 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He moved the chains just five times through the air, took four sacks and tied a career-high in batted passes at the line with three.
In his 12-year career, Wilson has just three games where he has had three passes batted down. Funnily enough, they've all come as a member of the Broncos.
Defensive spotlight: Chris Jones was a menace for the Broncos offensive line all game long and graded well in all facets of the game on first review. Jones ended the contest with two sacks and three hurries as a pass-rusher, and he added a tackle for loss in the run game for good measure.
Rookie spotlight: Rashee Rice is starting to earn a role in an offense screaming for a wide receiver to step up. The second-round pick out of SMU caught all four targets for a career-best 72 receiving yards and two first downs. Rice averaged 13.8 yards after the catch per reception on the night and is surely headed for a career-high PFF grade.
