The Pittsburgh Steelers outlasted the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5 to leave both teams at 3-2 on the year.
The Ravens took the lead early on a 14-yard touchdown run from Justice Hill, before adding to it with a 23-yard field goal by Justin Tucker in the second quarter.
They looked set to extend that lead, but a turnover helped the Steelers get in position for a field goal. The score was 10-3 at the half after the Ravens passed up on the opportunity for an easy Justin Tucker field goal and failed on fourth-and-2 with 19 seconds to go.
That’s how the score remained until the Steelers blocked a punt early in the fourth quarter, resulting in a safety. A short Chris Boswell field goal made it 10-8 with 7:10 left in the game.
As weird a game as it had been to that point, it was about to get weirder. The Steelers fumbled on a punt return, giving the Ravens the ball inside their opponent's 10-yard line. Baltimore failed to score, though, with Lamar Jackson throwing an interception to Joey Porter Jr.
The Steelers then scored on a long touchdown from Kenny Pickett to George Pickens and closed out the win.
Offensive spotlight: The Ravens' offense has the potential to be scary if they can fire on all cylinders, but once again they were their own worst enemies at times. Baltimore hadn’t had a dropped pass by a wide receiver through four games. By the end of the first half, they had three.
Lamar Jackson went 22-of-38 for 236 yards and the team racked up 125 yards on the ground, but those drops, along with a Justice Hill fumble and a curious decision to go for it on fourth down, will have frustrated fans. More drops and a costly Jackson interception in the fourth quarter turned what could have been a four-touchdown day into a loss.
The Steelers needed a spark on offense, and they got it in the form of George Pickens. The second-year player out of Georgia pulled in six receptions for 130 yards and the game-winning touchdown on 10 targets. He also added 16 yards on his lone rushing attempt. When Kenny Pickett needed a receiver to make a play, Pickens was there throughout the game.
Defensive spotlight: Marlon Humphrey‘s return boosted the Ravens' defense, but he ultimately allowed the game-winning touchdown to Pickens.
T.J. Watt was a game-changer for the Steelers on defense, causing issues both as a run defender and a pass-rusher. He notched a huge sack in the first half where he blew past Ravens backup right tackle Patrick Mekari, and he came up big at the end of the game with a sack and fumble recovery in the final moments.
Elandon Roberts was a standout against the run, including a key third-down stop on a Justice Hill carry late in the game.
Rookie spotlight: The Ravens continue to feed the ball to Zay Flowers. The rookie wide receiver saw 11 targets, catching five of them for 73 yards — although he did have two drops.
Joey Porter Jr. made the play of his young career in this contest, proving too strong for Odell Beckham Jr. on a throw into the end zone. An incompletion would have allowed the Ravens to take a five-point lead on a field goal, but the interception gave the Steelers more life and they didn’t look back.
