The Indianapolis Colts took down the Baltimore Ravens in overtime, 22-19, for an upset win with backup quarterback Gardner Minshew at the helm.
The Ravens marched down the field for a touchdown on their opening drive of the day but finished the first half with fumbles on four of their final nine offensive plays, allowing the Colts to lead 10-7 — courtesy of a Zack Moss touchdown where he beat linebacker Patrick Queen in coverage.
Baltimore's rushing attack got going late in the fourth quarter, though, with Lamar Jackson’s second touchdown run of the game giving them a 14-13 lead after three quarters. The Colts' only score of the period came on a 54-yard Matt Gay field goal. He connected from 53 early in the fourth quarter to put the Colts up 16-14.
Justin Tucker put the Ravens back on top, 17-16, with a 50-yarder that tied him for the second-most 50-plus-yard field goals in NFL history before a Gardner Minshew safety made it 19-16.
It wasn’t over yet, with the Colts stopping the Ravens on the drive where they tried to run out the clock before Matt Gay tied it up with another field goal from 53 yards to send the game to overtime. He again hit from 53 in the extra frame to seal the win.
Offensive spotlight: The Ravens failed to deal with pressure in this game. It led to two fumbles from Lamar Jackson in the pocket, one of which he lost, and hindered their ability to find plays downfield. They countered it by being strong on the ground, with Gus Edwards averaging 4.6 yards per carry on 11 attempts before getting hurt and Jackson leading the way with 101 yards on 14 carries.
Zack Moss had a big game, picking up 122 rushing yards on 30 carries and scoring on a 17-yard reception where he outmuscled Patrick Queen to the ball. Quarterback Gardner Minshew was solid in his first start for the Colts, going 27-of-44 for 227 yards and the touchdown pass to Moss.
Defensive spotlight: Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton was a problem for the Colts at the line of scrimmage, registering three sacks, a batted pass and two tackles for loss.
The pressure the Colts were able to generate when rushing only four slowed the Ravens' offense down after their first drive and forced them into plenty of mistakes. Edge defender Samson Ebukam recorded two tackles for loss and forced a fumble on a sack.
Rookie spotlight: Colts rookie cornerback JuJu Brents had a nice day in coverage, forcing a fumble while chasing down Ravens running back Kenyan Drake and later forcing an incompletion on a target to tight end Mark Andrews.
Wide receiver Josh Downs was Gardner Minshew’s favorite target, seeing 12 passes thrown his way. He turned that into 57 yards on eight receptions.
The Ravens again heavily featured Zay Flowers on offense, with the rookie picking up 48 yards on eight receptions from 10 targets. Interestingly, they didn’t get him involved on any screens until late in the third quarter, and he didn’t see any carries until the fourth quarter.
