The San Francisco 49ers completed a season sweep of the NFC West rival Seattle Seahawks and all but wrapped up the division after the Los Angeles Rams fell in overtime to the Baltimore Ravens.
After a tightly contested battle, emotions boiled over, with Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf and 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir ejected late in the game after a scuffle broke out. San Francisco improved to 10-3 with the 28-16 win, and Seattle dropped its fourth straight game and fell to 6-7.
Offensive spotlight: Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett hauled in six receptions for 89 yards, and Metcalf had just two receptions for 52 yards and a score. Backup quarterback Drew Lock was thrust into action and had a respectable start, completing 11 of his 16 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown in the first half. A few turnover-worthy throws cropped up in the second half, but Lock was serviceable against a good 49ers defense.
49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel went off for a second straight week, hauling in a 54-yard bomb from Brock Purdy down the left seam for a touchdown as a part of his seven-catch, 149-yard afternoon. Samuel also scored on a one-yard carry, walking into the end zone virtually untouched. Running back Christian McCaffrey ripped off several explosive rushes, most notably a 76-yarder to put San Francisco in scoring position on the first play of the game. The usual suspects all produced, with Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle getting in on the action. Seattle’s safety play was far from stellar, busting coverages or missing tackles on the backend to allow scores.
Defensive spotlight: The Seahawks got sacks from their top three interior defenders in Leonard Williams, Dre’Mont Jones and Jarran Reed. Reed is quietly having a spectacular season, but this defense just cannot get stops over the past six or so weeks. Safety Julian Love also made a nice play to intercept Brock Purdy over the middle.
49ers edge defender Nick Bosa was a problem all game long, getting deployed creatively by defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, including a sack where he was standing up and mugging the A-gap as a pseudo-spy. Bosa added another half-sack and a tackle for loss. Linebacker Fred Warner was a menace from sideline to sideline, grabbing an interception on a late fourth down that effectively ended this contest.
Rookie spotlight: Seahawks rookie wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba had four receptions for 25 yards, and cornerback Devon Witherspoon was shockingly held without any defensive statistics — not what you would expect from a playmaker of his caliber on the backend.
49ers rookie safety Ji'Ayir Brown has continued to make splash plays now serving as a full-time starter, picking off Drew Lock in this game and making a few other plays on downfield passes to D.K. Metcalf.
