The Cleveland Browns outlasted the Baltimore Ravens to win a wild one 33-31.
The Ravens took the lead on the opening possession, despite that belonging to the Browns, with Kyle Hamilton intercepting Deshaun Watson on a blitz and walking into the end zone for the touchdown. They would make it 14-0 on their opening possession on offense, with undrafted rookie running back Keaton Mitchell scoring from 39 yards out on his first carry before the Browns got on the board with a 36-yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins.
The Ravens responded with a field goal of their own, with Justin Tucker converting his 37-yard field goal to make it 17-3 before Dustin Hopkins made it 17-6 with a 28-yard kick. He would reduce the deficit further from 23 yards with the half ending 17-9. Lamar Jackson and Odell Beckham Jr. connected on a 40-yard touchdown on the Ravens' opening possession of the second half, putting the Ravens up 24-19 before the Browns matched it with a touchdown of their own with Kareem Hunt scoring from the three-yard line.
After a James Proche muff on a punt, Gus Edwards finished another drive for the Ravens to go up by two touchdowns again, but the Browns responded right back again with Watson connecting with Elijah Moore to make it 31-24. A tipped pass by Lamar Jackson then saw Greg Newsome II score on a pick-six, but Hopkins missed the extra point to make it 31-30 midway through the fourth quarter.
With the game on the line, Hopkins converted from 40 yards to seal the win for the Browns.
Offensive spotlight: Ravens left tackle Ronnie Stanley got rolled up on in the fourth quarter of the game and left the game. Stanley has been hampered by injuries over the past few years and, while he’s clearly not at the level he was back in 2019, it’s still a huge loss for the Ravens if he winds up being out for any length of time.
Deshaun Watson struggled in the first half, going six-for-20 for 79 yards and seeing that tipped ball returned for a touchdown early. He left the game at the end of the first half after a hit from Ravens interior defender Justin Madubuike, but returned to start the second half and looked much better, finishing the game 20-for-34 for 213 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Defensive spotlight: Kyle Hamilton opened the game as well as you can for the Ravens, tipping and intercepting a pass from Deshaun Watson before walking into the end zone for the touchdown. A big concern for the Ravens was that cornerback Marlon Humphrey, who had been questionable coming into the game, left the game due to injury, with the Ravens having a short turnaround before facing the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football.
There’s a reason why Myles Garrett is the front-runner for defensive player of the year at this stage, and despite the Ravens keeping him off the stat sheet for almost three full quarters he still made his presence felt, bringing Lamar Jackson down on two straight plays at the end of the third quarter.
Rookie spotlight: Keaton Mitchell proved to be a spark for the Ravens offense once again, scoring on that 39-yard run and picking up 32 yards on a reception. Wide receiver Zay Flowers saw more looks downfield this week, following up last week’s single reception game with five catches for 73 yards.
