After throwing an interception on his first drive of the game, Trey Lance led the San Francisco 49ers on three-straight scoring ones to close it out. The final one ended on a game-winning field goal by Jake Moody with no time left to defeat the Denver Broncos 21-20 in an unusually thrilling preseason game.
Offensive spotlight: Brock Purdy made his much-anticipated return following his elbow surgery this offseason. On his lone drive of the night, the second-year quarterback completed four of his five attempts for 65 yards, averaging an impressive 13 yards per attempt.
Defensive spotlight: Fred Warner reminded everyone why he’s the linebacker in football Saturday night. He’s the second-highest-graded defender from the game on first review (79.8) and had a pair of stops on just eight coverage snaps.
Rookie spotlight: 49ers wide receiver Ronnie Bell had by far the strongest showing of the rookies tonight. The seventh-rounder from Michigan caught seven of his nine targets for 114 yards in the win tonight.
Offensive line spotlight: Four of Denver’s five starters on the offensive line saw extensive action tonight, with right tackle Mike McGlinchey the only one sitting out the contest. Of the four starters, Quinn Meinerz was the most impressive. The third-year right guard didn’t allow any pressures on 13 pass-blocking snaps.
