NFL Preseason Week 1 Game Recap: Cleveland Browns 24, Jacksonville Jaguars 13

The Cleveland Browns got off to a winning start to their 2022 preseason, beating the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-13 at TIAA Bank Stadium on Friday.

Deshaun Watson made his Browns debut Friday night, playing three series in total. He completed just 1-of-5 passes for 7 yards, though wideout Anthony Schwartz dropped two of his incompletions.

With Jacoby Brissett inactive, backup QB Joshua Dobbs handled 55.6% of the team's dropbacks. He was particularly impressive from a clean pocket, going 9-for-11 for 99 yards and a touchdown, good for a 134.5 passer rating.

RUNNING BACK

With Cleveland's star running backs on the sideline, Jerome Ford and John Kelly handled the rushing duties, accounting for 20 of the Browns' 27 rush attempts.

• Ford ran for 57 yards on his 10 carries, forcing two missed tackles along the way. Two of his runs went for 10 or more yards and just 14 of his yards came after contact.

Kelly scratched out 20 yards from his 10 carries but 26 yards came after contact, showing how tough it was for him on the ground tonight.

The Browns pass-catchers weren't much of a factor tonight. Collectively, the receivers and tight ends caught just seven of their 13 targets for 64 yards and only three first downs.

Former undrafted free agent tight end Nakia Griffin-Stewart led the way, catching two of his targets for 26 yards and adding 13 yards after the catch.

OFFENSIVE LINE

They didn't give up a hit or sack, but the Browns' offensive line did give up eight hurries from 26 pass-blocking snaps in total.

Fourth-year guard Hjalte Froholdt played well across his 17 pass-blocking snaps, keeping a completely clean slate en route to an 80.0-plus pass-blocking grade on first review.

DEFENSIVE LINE

The Browns defensive line recorded two sacks, one hit and five hurries across 44 pass-rush snaps.

Seventh-round rookie Isaiah Thomas recorded the highest pass-rush win rate on first review, beating his blocker on 17.6% of his 17 snaps. Thomas tallied a sack and a hurry tonight.

LINEBACKER

Former seventh-round pick Dakota Allen recorded four run stops on 16 run-defense snaps. He tallied two tackles for loss or no gain and will likely end up with an 80.0-plus run-defense grade.

SECONDARY

Martin Emerson was the most targeted Browns defensive back tonight, seeing five targets thrown his way. He allowed two receptions for 40 yards but came down with an interception.

Greedy Williams locked down his opponents. Targeted three times, he forced two incompletions and didn't allow a reception into his coverage.

Lawrence got the start for Jacksonville and completed 6-of-12 pass attempts for 95 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions. He threw the ball 10.3 yards down the field on average, the highest mark among Jags quarterbacks.

Third-year QB Jake Luton led the team in dropbacks (25). He went 12-of-21 for 92 yards and an interception, taking four sacks along the way.

RUNNING BACK

Travis Etienne led the team in rush attempts (9). The second-year back churned out just 23 yards but forced two missed tackles. On average, Etienne was contacted 0.6 yards behind the line of scrimmage every time he ran the ball tonight.

Jeff Cotton led the Jaguars in receiving snaps, with 33. Cotton was targeted three times but was held without a catch.

Zay Jones had a relatively productive evening, turning four targets into two receptions for 47 yards, two first downs and two explosive plays of 15 or more yards.

• K'Lavon Chaisson recorded two pass-rush wins across his nine pass-rush snaps and also snagged a tackle assist against the run.

• Rookie linebacker Chad Muma came away with two defensive stops and one tackle for loss against the run.

SECONDARY

Montaric Brown allowed three catches from three targets for two first downs and 23 yards. He also missed a tackle.
