Los Angeles Rams RB Cam Akers out Sunday, team non-committal on his future
- Akers has been away the last two days due to personal reasons and HC Sean McVay told reporters they are “working through some different things.”
- Asked whether he expects Akers to be with the team moving forward, McVay declined to give an answer and reiterated, “We're working through some different things right now.”
- Akers has rushed for 151 yards on 51 attempts with one touchdown this season. After Week 1, McVay publicly said he needed to see more “urgency” from Akers. The third-year back has earned a 59.0 PFF grade so far this year.
- The Rams only have two other running backs on the active roster at the moment with Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown. Rookie Ronnie Rivers is on the practice squad.
- The Rams (-10) travel to Carolina to take on the Panthers on Sunday. They have a bye next week.
Carolina Panthers to start PJ Walker on Sunday
- Walker entered training camp projected as Carolina’s fourth-string quarterback. However, preseason injuries to Sam Darnold and Matt Corral moved him up to backup, and starter Baker Mayfield suffered a high-ankle sprain last week against the San Francisco 49ers.
- Mayfield is officially listed as doubtful, but interim head coach Steve Wilks said there is a chance he could be active and serve as the backup. Jacob Eason would be elevated from the practice squad if Mayfield can’t go.
- Walker has started twice for Carolina over the last two years and the team won both games. He earned a 52.0 PFF grade last season.
New Orleans Saints will stick with Andy Dalton this week
- Jameis Winston is still not ready to play as he recovers from back and ankle injuries. He’s officially listed as questionable, but head coach Dennis Allen said Dalton is going to start against the Cincinnati Bengals, his former team.
- The Saints are 1-1 with Dalton the last two weeks. He has gone 36-of-52 for 423 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He’s earned an 80.3 PFF grade.
- This will be the third time Dalton has faced the Bengals since they released him in 2020 after nine years. He started against them as a member of the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 and the Chicago Bears in 2021 and won both games.
- The Saints will be without CB Marshon Lattimore (ab) and WRs Michael Thomas (foot), Jarvis Landry (ankle) and Deonte Harty (foot). Rookie WR Chris Olave (concussion) is questionable.
