The Chiefs have boxed themselves into a WR dilemma. Rookie Rashee Rice may be the answer

The Kansas City Chiefs‘ wide receivers are a problem. This has been a concern dating back to the offseason, but it’s not getting any better, and it cost them a big game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night in Week 11.

Patrick Mahomes suffered five drops from his receivers, including a game-changing miscue by Marquez Valdes-Scantling that would have given the Chiefs the lead with less than two minutes on the clock.

Since Kansas City traded away Tyreek Hill, it has become clear that the offense's number-one receiver is actually a tight end — Travis Kelce. And so the need for wide receivers to make an impact is less profound than it looked on paper. But it’s not absent.

Kelce has 70 targets to lead the team this season, even with a game missed due to injury. That’s 30 more than any other Chiefs receiver but still represents only a fraction of the 334 pass attempts Mahomes has put in the air. Those passes have to go somewhere, and they need a base level of competence in the group.

As an early second-round draft pick in 2022, Skyy Moore has been a complete disappointment thus far in the NFL. In an era where rookies hit the ground running with ease, Moore managed just 27 catches for 267 yards last season during the Chiefs' Super Bowl run. This season, the opportunity for more playing time and success was opened by JuJu Smith-Schuster‘s departure in the offseason. Moore is playing more and producing less, averaging just 0.88 yards per route run to rank 89th in the league.
