CHICAGO BEARS

The Bears fired both head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace. Both moves were widely expected, and Chicago will now hit the reset button. Team chairman George McCaskey said they will consult with Hall of Famer Bill Polian for advice on finding a new GM and coach.

HOUSTON TEXANS

The Texans fired head coach David Culley after just one season with the team. The reality is that Culley was hired just to be a “bridge head coach” as the Texans worked through some organizational chaos last offseason. They had the Deshaun Watson trade request and sexual misconduct allegations, they didn’t have a first- or second-round pick, and ownership was under a lot of fire from the fanbase. General manager Nick Caserio will now look to hire a new head coach from his shortlist of candidates. Brian Flores, Jerod Mayo and possibly Josh McDaniels are the names to watch.

MIAMI DOLPHINS

The Dolphins fired head coach Brian Flores after three seasons with the team. While the move might come as a surprise, there were rumblings over the last month that this could happen. During Miami's seven-game losing streak, there was a lot of talk that the coaching staff in Miami were not getting along. “There was a lot of finger-pointing going on with the offensive staff,” a source said at the time. The Dolphins will keep GM Chris Grier, and he will assist owner Stephen Ross in the head coaching search. Ross, who is a Michigan man, told reporters that he will not pursue Jim Harbaugh.

GM Mike Mayock was fired.

New Orleans Saints

Saints Head Coach Sean Payton announced that he is stepping away from coaching after 16 years with the organization. The leaguewide expectation is that he will take a break in 2022 and possibly do television for at least one season, and the door would be open for a return to coaching in 2023. Meanwhile, New Orleans will go through a head coach search as a new era begins.  DC Dennis Allen is an obvious candidate, but the Saints will need to go through a head coaching search and comply with the Rooney Rule.
