It was an eventful opening week of the 2023 NFL season. We had upsets, breakout and surprise performances and more. As we get ready for Week 2, here is each team’s highest-graded wide receiver.
AFC East
Buffalo Bills: Stefon Diggs (75.5 overall grade, 74.5 receiving grade)
Diggs was a bright spot against the Jets. He secured 10 of his 13 targets for 102 yards and six first downs. He was also able to stretch the field, with four catches of 15-plus yards.
Miami Dolphins: Tyreek Hill (93.0 overall grade, 92.7 receiving grade)
Hill continues to put on a show in Miami, as he finished Week 1 as the league's highest-graded receiver. Hill led all receivers in targets (15), catches (11) and yards (215) while averaging a position-best 6.14 yards per route run.
Hill also led the position with nine first-down conversions and seven explosive plays of 15 yards or more. His most memorable catch of the day may have been his fourth-quarter touchdown grab over Michael Davis to give the Dolphins the lead late in the game.
New England Patriots: Kendrick Bourne (66.4 overall grade, 65.9 receiving grade)
Bourne paced New England with six catches for 64 yards. Three of his catches moved the chains, and he scored twice. Bourne tied for fifth in targets (11), and two of his catches went for over 15 yards.
New York Jets: Garrett Wilson (84.6 overall grade (81.4 receiving grade)
The Jets suffered a devasting blow with the loss of Aaron Rodgers, but Garrett Wilson continues to make big plays for the offense. Wilson had the grab of the night with his one-handed touchdown catch over Tre’Davious White. That play helped tie the game for New York late in the fourth quarter and set up overtime. Wilson finished the night catching all five of his targets for 34 yards.
AFC North
Baltimore Ravens: Zay Flowers (78.2 overall grade, 80.3 receiving grade)
Baltimore’s first-round pick turned in an impressive performance, as he led the team in targets (10), catches (9) and receiving yards (78). Flowers picked up five first downs. He led all receivers with 34 yards after contact and four missed tackles forced.
Cincinnati Bengals: Ja’Marr Chase (69.8 overall grade, 70.5 receiving grade)
Chase struggled against the Browns' secondary, as he gained only 39 yards on nine targets. Three of his five catches went for first downs, and he was able to force two missed tackles.
Cleveland Browns: Amari Cooper (70.3 overall grade, 67.1 receiving grade)
Cleveland’s receivers also struggled despite their statement win over the Bengals. Amari Cooper paced the team with three catches for 37 yards and one explosive gain.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Diontae Johnson (71.4 overall grade, 70.0 receiving grade)
Pittsburgh suffered a tough loss against San Francisco and lost Diontae Johnson in the process. Johnson caught three of his six targets for 48 yards and two first downs. He had two explosive gains, including his 26-yard play where he injured his hamstring. Johnson is expected to miss a few weeks.
AFC South
Houston Texans: Nico Collins (71.8 overall grade, 69.6 receiving grade)
Collins was targeted 11 times and led Houston’s receivers with 80 yards on the day. Three of his six catches gained first downs, and he had two third-down plays of 15-plus yards.
Indianapolis Colts: Michael Pittman Jr. (69.4 overall grade, 69.6 receiving grade)
Pittman had a solid day against the Jaguars, securing eight catches for 97 yards and four first downs. He had two explosive gains on the day, including a 39-yard screen play that went for a touchdown.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Calvin Ridley (76.0 overall grade, 75.0 receiving grade)
Calvin Ridley cemented himself as Trevor Lawrence’s No. 1 receiver in his Jacksonville debut. He caught 8-of-11 targets for 101 yards and one touchdown. Ridley averaged 2.97 yards per route run, gained four first downs and produced two explosive plays.
Tennessee Titans: Nick Westbrook-Ikhine (75.4 overall grade, 74.4 receiving grade)
Tennessee continued to struggle with its passing game despite adding DeAndre Hopkins to its receiving corps. Westbrook-Ikhine caught four passes for 58 yards, but he made the most out of those plays. Forty-six of his yards came after the catch, including two plays of 15-plus yards. Westbrook-Ikhine was able to force two missed tackles and pick up three first downs.
AFC West
Denver Broncos: Courtland Sutton (64.8 overall grade, 64.5 receiving grade)
The Raider’s defense shut down Denver’s receiving group. Courtland Sutton led the way with four catches for 32 yards. He scored a touchdown and gained two first downs.
Kansas City Chiefs: Rashee Rice (R, 80.7 off grade, 79.9 receiving grade)
Rashee Rice flashed with two first downs, a touchdown and an explosive play in his NFL debut. He finished the night with three catches for 29 yards and averaged 2.42 yards per route run (15th).
Las Vegas Raiders: Davante Adams (75.9 overall grade, 74.5 receiving grade)
Jakobi Meyers and Davante Adams led the way in Vegas’ win over Denver. Adams finished with 66 yards and gained four first downs on six catches. He had one explosive gain and averaged 2.28 yards per route run.
Los Angeles Chargers: Keenan Allen (68.6 overall grade, 70.1 receiving grade)
Keenan Allen had a solid day in defeat, leading the team with six catches for 76 yards and two first downs.
NFC East
Dallas Cowboys: CeeDee Lamb (75.9 overall grade, 73.4 receiving grade)
The Giants struggled to stop CeeDee Lamb. He caught all four of his targets for 77 yards and had two plays of 15-plus yards. Lamb averaged 3.35 yards per route run and 9.5 yards after the catch per reception.
New York Giants: Darius Slayton (54.5 overall grade, 54.7receiving grade)
On the other side, Dallas had no problem containing New York’s receivers. Darius Slayton led the team in catches (3) but gained only 15 yards.
Philadelphia Eagles: A.J. Brown (75.2 overall grade, 74.7 receiving grade)
Brown has now caught 11 of his 15 targets for 108 receiving yards on the year. He's yet to find the end zone, but he's moved the chains six times and hasn't dropped a pass so far.
Washington Commanders: Curtis Samuel (68.5 overall grade, 66.3 receiving grade)
Washington’s highly anticipated, revamped offense got off to a slow start in its win over Arizona. Curtis Samuel caught all five of his targets for 54 yards and two first downs. Samuel led the receiving group with 28 yards after the catch and two explosive gains.
NFC North
Chicago Bears: Tyler Scott (67.1 overall grade, 66.0 receiving grade)
Chicago’s receivers had their work cut out for them against Green Bay. Scott caught two passes for 14 yards and a first down. Ten of his yards came after the catch, and he led the receiver group in yards per route run (1.40).
Detroit Lions: Josh Reynolds (72.9 overall grade, 70.8 receiving grade)
Reynolds had an impressive night against Kansas City. Each of his four catches went for first downs, and he led the team in receiving yards (80). Twenty of his yards came after contact, and he averaged 2.76 yards per route run.
Green Bay Packers: Romeo Doubs (78.4 overall grade, 76.6 receiving grade)
Green Bay earned a win in the first game of the Jordan Love era, but their receivers struggled to gain much against Chicago. Romeo Doubs had only four catches for 26 yards, but they turned into big plays for the Packers. Doubs gained three first downs and scored twice.
Minnesota Vikings: Justin Jefferson (89.5 overall grade, 87.6 receiving grade)
He's played one more game than most of the field, but Jefferson still leads the position in targets (25), catches (20) and receiving yards (309) entering the main slate of Week 2. He's averaging a colossal 3.32 yards per route run and has generated a 118.2 passer rating when targeted.
NFC South
Atlanta Falcons: Mack Hollins (59.1 overall grade, 62.9 receiving grade)
While Atlanta leaned on Bijan Robinson in the receiving game — he saw a team-high six targets — Mack Hollins led the receiver group with three catches for 31 yards and a first down. Atlanta looked to get him the ball downfield, as he finished second on the team with a 9.7-yard average depth of target.
Carolina Panthers: Laviska Shenault Jr. (65.3 overall grade, 73.5 receiving grade)
Shenault was used as a screen threat against Atlanta. He gained 16 yards and a first down on two catches, with eight of his yards coming after contact.
New Orleans Saints: Rashid Shaheed (81.6 overall grade, 76.5 receiving grade)
Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed led the Saints' attack against the Titans. Shaheed caught five of his six targets for 89 yards, one score and three first downs. Three of his catches went for over 15 yards, and he finished third in yards per route run (3.56).
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Chris Godwin (69.1 overall grade, 69.0 receiving grade)
Tampa Bay earned a win in their first game without Tom Brady. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin led the way with 11 combined catches on 15 targets. Godwin finished the day with five catches for 51 yards and led the team with four first-down conversions.
NFC West
Arizona Cardinals: Marquise Brown (65.0 overall grade, 66.5 receiving grade)
Marquise Brown was Arizona’s most targeted receiver last Sunday (5). He snagged only three catches for 28 yards, but each one went for a first down.
Los Angeles Rams: Puka Nacua (81.3 overall grade, 80.0 receiving grade)
Puka Nacua had a breakout performance in his NFL debut. He led the Rams in catches (10) and targets (14) and finished top-three among all receivers in both categories.
Nacua and Tutu Atwell each went off for 119 yards against the Seahawks. While neither player scored, they combined for 12 first downs and six explosive plays.
Each receiver also averaged 3.40 yards per route run. If both players can build off Sunday’s performance, the Rams could have a dangerous receiving trio when Cooper Kupp returns.
San Francisco 49ers: Brandon Aiyuk (92.9 overall grade, 92.8 receiving grade)
Brandon Aiyuk earned a 92.8 receiving grade on a flawless day against the Steelers. He caught all eight of his targets and picked up a first down each time. He gained 129 yards and scored twice. Aiyuk finished second among all receivers with six explosive plays and 4.30 yards per route run.
Seattle Seahawks: D.K. Metcalf (64.9 overall grade, 71.2 receiving grade)
While the Rams receivers were able to exploit Seattle’s defense, the Seahawks struggled to get their own going against the Rams. Metcalf led the way with three catches for 47 yards. He picked up two first downs and had one play of 15-plus yards.
