Don’t look now, but the Detroit Lions‘ Jared Goff is the best-graded quarterback in the NFL.
His 90.4 mark isn’t just ahead of everybody else through six weeks of the season, but it represents a new high watermark for the former No. 1 overall pick — and outside of the sheltered environment of the Sean McVay system once credited for propping him up and manufacturing his production.
That’s not to say Goff isn’t still benefiting from an outstanding environment — Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is one of the best in the game and the rest of the offense has plenty of talent — but when it comes to determining how much of the credit belongs to Goff, he is making major inroads.
It’s hard to argue with what Goff has accomplished through six games this season. He already has nine big-time throws, halfway to last season’s total despite a fraction of the dropbacks. His big-time throw rate has improved from 2.9% last season to 4.3% this year.
He is passing for 8.0 yards per attempt, his second-best career total (8.1 yards per attempt in 2018). His 105.1 passer rating also represents, by far, the best figure of his career.
