• Josh Allen, Brian Burns headline the class: The duo make up the only edge defenders in the top five of PFF's 2024 free agency rankings.
• Keep an eye on the underrated Bryce Huff: PFF's 15th-ranked free agent, Huff would add an immediate impact on money downs for any team willing to pay a bit extra to acquire a premium designated pass rusher.

We started our free agent landing spots series with quarterbacks and wide receivers, rounded out the skill position players with running backs and tight ends and wrapped up the offensive side of the ball with offensive linemen. Now we’re pivoting to the defensive side of the ball, starting with a deep and diverse edge defender group. We’re operating under the assumption here that teams do not retain their own top pending free agents at the respective positions.

3. EDGE JOSH ALLEN, JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
Potential landing spot(s): Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots
Allen backed up a strong 2022 with an extraordinary 2023 season, racking up career highs in quarterback pressures (69) and sacks (13.5) already through Week 14, coupled with a 20.1% pass-rush win rate that ranked among the league’s best.
Carolina hypothetically swaps Allen in for Brian Burns, or New England makes a huge free-agent splash on the edge.
Top free agent comparison: Melvin Ingram, 2017

Josh Allen | 89.4 | 91.4 | 17.5% | 82.4 | ? |

5. EDGE BRIAN BURNS, CAROLINA PANTHERS
Potential landing spot(s): Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans
Burns is a fit in multiple defensive fronts that deploy a healthy dose of even and odd fronts, and he could form a dynamic duo with two young ascending edge rushers in Odafe Oweh or Will Anderson Jr.
Top free agent comparison: Frank Clark, 2019
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Brian Burns | 75.6 | 80.8 | 11.6% | 56.3 | |

12. EDGE DANIELLE HUNTER, MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Potential landing spot(s): Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars
Hunter has experience playing for Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon, or he could shift back to more of a 4-3 base defense under new Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen, though Nielsen will also cater to his personnel as he did with the Atlanta defense in 2023.
Top free agent comparison: Jason Pierre-Paul, 2017
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Danielle Hunter | 83.7 | 88.6 | 15.8% | 61.5 | ? |

18. EDGE BRYCE HUFF, NEW YORK JETS
Potential landing spot(s): New York Giants, Washington Commanders
Huff adds an immediate impact on money downs for any team willing to pay a bit extra to acquire a premium designated pass rusher, a skill set both of these NFC East teams need desperately.
Top free agent comparison: Carl Lawson, 2021
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Bryce Huff | 90.4 | 90.5 | 23.7% | 49.9 | ? |

28. EDGE CHASE YOUNG, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Potential landing spot(s): Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans
Young had a strong Super Bowl showing after a bit of a lackluster playoff run to that point, and it looks like a one-year mercenary deal may still be favorable before he looks to cash in on a multi-year contract. Baltimore has cycled through these types of pass rushers in recent years, and Texans general manager Nick Caserio has taken this approach in free agency since he arrived in Houston.
Top free agent comparison: Brian Orakpo, 2014
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Chase Young | 75.0 | 72.7 | 14.7% | 64.7 | ? |

38. EDGE JONATHAN GREENARD, HOUSTON TEXANS
Potential landing spot(s): Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts
Greenard has super long arms and is a good lateral athlete who can hold up well at the point of attack while demonstrating a deeper bag of pass-rush moves in 2023. He brings a motor that Chicago is looking for, and the Bears could further solidify one of the best run defenses in the NFL while also adding pass-rush juice.
The Colts don’t typically make splashes quite this big, but the team made a shrewd signing with Samson Ebukam last offseason. Here, they steal a division rival's young player while further bolstering a platoon defensive line that could lose a few pieces this offseason.
Top free agent comparison: Nick Perry, 2017
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Jonathan Greenard | 69.4 | 68.1 | 11.3% | 72.9 | ? |

40. EDGE JADEVEON CLOWNEY, BALTIMORE RAVENS
Potential landing spot(s): Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins
Clowney could be something of a Leonard Floyd replacement coming off one of the best seasons of his career, as a long, freakishly athletic edge who defends the run very well.
The Dolphins hired former Baltimore Ravens assistant head coach and defensive line coach Anthony Weaver to be their new defensive coordinator, so naturally, we consider a reunion here with Clowney playing a very prominent role early in the season while Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb recover from major injuries.
Top free agent comparison: Brian Orakpo, 2015
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Jadeveon Clowney | 79.9 | 83.8 | 15.1% | 76.2 | ? |

42. EDGE ZA'DARIUS SMITH, CLEVELAND BROWNS
Potential landing spot(s): Detroit Lions, Houston Texans
The Lions add another defensive lineman who they can move all over the formation, something we saw more and more of with Aidan Hutchinson throughout the 2023 season and a staple of John Cominsky’s usage.
Houston adds a veteran to play opposite Will Anderson Jr. who has been a stand-up outside linebacker dating back to his Green Bay days, has played with his hand in the dirt and can also add to the interior pass rush if Sheldon Rankins departs in free agency.
Top free agent comparison: Robert Ayers, 2016
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Za’Darius Smith | 90.2 | 90.9 | 18.7% | 68.2 | ? |

48. EDGE JOSH UCHE, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
Potential landing spot(s): Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings
Uche can be the pass-rush specialist off the edge opposite rookie Byron Young, who got his career off to a great start in 2023, stepping up in obvious passing situations and chasing down the elusive quarterbacks of the NFC West.
Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores never coached Uche in New England but has an obvious connection there, and he’ll presumably still deploy a platoon defensive line unit that blitzes at one of the highest rates in the NFL, a good fit for Uche.
Top free agent comparison: Haason Reddick, 2021
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Josh Uche | 82.0 | 79.1 | 15.5% | 63.0 | ? |
Haason Reddick | 80.4 | 88.0 | 10.9% | 56.7 | 3.3% |

Contract projection: Available in PFF's free agency rankings
49. EDGE LEONARD FLOYD, BUFFALO BILLS
Potential landing spot(s): Carolina Panthers, New York Giants
Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero adds a veteran presence on the edge, with Floyd a good fit in a predominantly 3-4 base defense that will capitalize on quarterbacks chased into his lane by Brian Burns — if the team retains him — and is efficient on stunts, which he can run with Derrick Brown on the interior.
The Giants need to add several pieces on the edge for new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, and there is the connection here with general manager Joe Schoen formerly working with the Buffalo Bills.
Top free agent comparison: Bruce Irvin, 2018
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Leonard Floyd | 64.4 | 67.5 | 10.5% | 57.0 | ? |

59. EDGE Andrew Van Ginkel, Miami Dolphins
Potential landing spot(s): Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles
Van Ginkel stepped up in the absence of several Dolphins edge rushers last season and returns to the Midwest, where he played college football at Wisconsin, also reuniting with former head coach Brian Flores, who drafted Van Ginkel in his first year in Miami.
Philadelphia may move on from Haason Reddick this offseason, and here we have Van Ginkel following defensive coordinator Vic Fangio from Miami. Van Ginkel just had a career year under his tutelage, so why not try to recreate that magic?
Top free agent comparison: Shaq Barrett, 2019
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Andrew Van Ginkel | 89.6 | 89.9 | 16.5% | 81.4 | ? |

64. EDGE Denico Autry, Tennessee Titans
Potential landing spot(s): Cleveland Browns, New York Giants
If the Browns were to hypothetically lose Za’Darius Smith, they add a versatile defensive lineman who can line up as a five-technique end, kick outside and rush from between the tackles.
New Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen comes over from Tennessee, where Autry just had several of the best seasons of his lengthy career.
Top free agent comparison: Everson Griffen, 2020
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Denico Autry | 72.1 | 78.8 | 12.4% | 60.3 | ? |

Contract projection: Available in PFF's free agency rankings
85. EDGE Dorance Armstrong, Dallas Cowboys
Potential landing spot(s): Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Commanders
Tampa Bay needs more juice off the edge, even with a crop of young talent making strides, and Armstrong would be a great addition to a rotation coming off the highest pass-rush grade of his career.
New Commanders head coach Dan Quinn knows he’s joining a team that just traded both Montez Sweat and Chase Young at this past year’s deadline, so he recruits Armstrong to follow him. In the three seasons before Dan Quinn arrived in Dallas, Armstrong had 29 total quarterback pressures on 451 pass-rush snaps. In three seasons with Quinn, Armstrong had at least 34 pressures in each year on at most 325 pass-rush snaps.
Top free agent comparison: Samson Ebukam, 2023
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Dorance Armstrong | 65.8 | 71.3 | 9.8% | 57.3 | ? |

89. EDGE Brandon Graham, Philadelphia Eagles
Potential landing spot(s): Kansas City Chiefs
Odds are Graham finishes out his career with the Eagles, but we think the one and only other idea could perhaps be a reunion with Andy Reid, who drafted him No. 13 overall back in 2010.
Top free agent comparison: James Harrison, 2015
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Brandon Graham | 89.7 | 91.3 | 19.7% | 70.0 | ? |

99. EDGE Carl Lawson, New York Jets
Potential landing spot(s): Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs
Smart teams looking to buy low on a player who was still recovering from a torn Achilles sustained in 2021 and also was buried on a deep edge defender depth chart with the New York Jets will give Lawson a look. Hence, the Ravens and Chiefs are potential suitors.
Top free agent comparison: Dante Fowler Jr., 2023
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Carl Lawson | 70.4 | 71.6 | 13.4% | 51.7 | ? |

106. EDGE A.J. Epenesa, Buffalo Bills
Potential landing spot(s): Chicago Bears
The Bears hired former Bills assistant head coach/defensive line coach Eric Washington to be their new defensive coordinator, and they need to either make a splash or a few additions on the edge this offseason. Epenesa had the best year of his career as he worked hard to continue to develop after a slower start to his career.
Top free agent comparison: Deatrich Wise Jr., 2021
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
A.J. Epenesa | 75.0 | 79.0 | 10.6% | 49.3 | ? |

107. EDGE Derek Barnett, Houston Texans
Potential landing spot(s): Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints
We’re counting Houston here since the Texans added Barnett very late in the season. He flourished down the stretch, perhaps demonstrating exactly what Houston was hoping to see to encourage another contract.
New Orleans could use more complementary pieces across its defensive line, and Barnett is a good fit alongside Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson.
Top free agent comparison: Alex Okafor, 2018
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Derek Barnett | 75.3 | 77.4 | 15.5% | 79.7 | ? |

121. EDGE Tyquan Lewis, Indianapolis Colts
Potential landing spot(s): Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints
This is another reunion for Chicago, with Lewis rejoining Matt Eberflus after the former Colts defensive coordinator likely played a role in drafting Lewis to Indianapolis in the second round in 2018. Lewis doubled his prior career high in a season with 44 pressures in 2023.
The Saints adding rotational veterans along the defensive line should be a priority, as we mentioned above.
Top free agent comparison: Adrian Clayborn, 2016
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Tyquan Lewis | 73.3 | 77.0 | 15.4% | 54.5 | ? |

Contract projection: Available in PFF's free agency rankings
125. EDGE Kyle Van Noy, Baltimore Ravens
Potential landing spot(s): Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings
Van Noy to Carolina is not just about our hypothetical of Brian Burns leaving, but it also could fill a void left behind by off-ball linebacker Frankie Luvu, who was also a key cog in the Panthers' pass rush, bringing a similar overall skill set to Van Noy.
In Minnesota, Van Noy reunites with Brian Flores but also adds versatility, primarily lining up on the edge but also as a potential speller of undrafted free agent rookie Ivan Pace Jr.
Top free agent comparison: Markus Golden, 2021
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Kyle Van Noy | 73.3 | 71.3 | 12.4% | 59.3 | ? |

127. EDGE Marcus Davenport, Minnesota Vikings
Potential landing spot(s): Cincinnati Bengals, San Francisco 49ers
Cincinnati used its 2023 first-round pick on edge defender Myles Murphy and has other young players on the edge, but here the Bengals add a big athlete who can line up and rush from the inside, something they need more of whether or not they keep D.J. Reader around.
Davenport could become the latest student of the Kris Kocurek career rehabilitation school and has a similar profile to Arik Armstead if he doesn’t return in 2023, given his size allowing him to line up on the interior. This is an intriguing buy-low on a former first-round pick, something the 49ers love to do along the defensive line.

138. EDGE Darrell Taylor, Seattle Seahawks
Potential landing spot(s): Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams
The Cardinals need more pieces alongside Dennis Gardeck and rookie B.J. Ojulari, so they steal a division rival who may be the odd man out of a Seahawks edge unit that added second-round picks in back-to-back draft classes.
The Rams also steal an outside linebacker away from Seattle and pair him with a fellow Tennessee Volunteer alumnus in rookie Byron Young.
Top free agent comparison: Andre Branch, 2016
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |
Darrell Taylor | 67.5 | 72.9 | 7.5% | 39.0 | ? |

139. EDGE Anfernee Jennings, New England Patriots
Potential landing spot(s): Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks
We’re going back to the Brian Flores connection here and prioritizing a good early-down run defender for a defense that needs help in that area.
Seattle’s edge defender unit earned one of the lowest grades in the NFL against the run, with a lot of smaller pass-rusher builds. Here, the Seahawks add an early-down run stuffer to the platoon.
Top free agent comparison: Devon Kennard, 2017
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |

141. EDGE D.J. Wonnum, Minnesota Vikings
Potential landing spot(s): Detroit Lions, Washington Commanders
Detroit may not want to make a big splash on the defensive line, perhaps prioritizing the secondary, but Wonnum can log a lot of snaps and we saw defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn jack up his blitz rate toward the end of 2023, which Wonnum is certainly comfortable with after his season in Minnesota.
Washington will likely sign multiple edge rushers this offseason, and we’ve mentioned the pass-rush specialist types above in Bryce Huff and Dorance Armstrong, but here they could add a three-down player who is solid all-around. Dan Quinn’s Cowboys had one of the deepest edge groups in the NFL, and we don’t expect that to change much.
Top free agent comparison: Al-Quadin Muhammad, 2022
Player | Pass-rush grade | True pass set pass-rush grade | Pass-rush win rate | Run-defense grade | APY as % of Cap at signing |

147. EDGE Bud Dupree, Atlanta Falcons
Potential landing spot(s): Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars
Dupree had a solid bounce-back season with the Atlanta Falcons after he was let go by the Tennessee Titans. He still has some burst as a straight-line edge rusher who brings physicality.
Dupree could follow former Falcons defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen to his next stop in Jacksonville, adding a complementary piece to what will likely remain the duo of Josh Allen and Travon Walker off the edge. Dupree’s presence could enable Jacksonville to kick Walker inside on some pass-rush downs, an area he is clearly comfortable with and something that should already be happening more often.

161. EDGE Yannick Ngakoue, Chicago Bears
Potential landing spot(s): New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks
We’ve mentioned the Giants plenty, but the edge rush talent beyond Kayvon Thibodeaux is virtually non-existent, and New York is likely selecting too early at No. 6 overall to consider taking a defensive player — perhaps after a trade-down, if they go that route.
Aston Wilson, the Bears' assistant defensive line coach in 2023, was hired by Seattle’s new coaching staff. Ngakoue didn’t have the best season of his career in 2023 by any stretch, but there is familiarity here nonetheless.

163. EDGE Clelin Ferrell, San Francisco 49ers
Potential landing spot(s): Chicago Bears, New York Jets
Ferrell had a decent year on a more talented defensive front than the one he played with in Las Vegas to start his career but was still slowly phased out of the rotation at the end of the season. Nonetheless, he’s a big defensive end with great character, which fits the Bears' mold.
Ferrell goes from San Francisco to the Jets, where perhaps Robert Saleh can find a role for him akin to Solomon Thomas lining up more on the interior once arriving in New York.

166. EDGE Romeo Okwara, Detroit Lions
Potential landing spot(s): Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers
Okwara was very effective down the stretch in 2023 once he finally got healthy. He could bring some juice as a designated pass rusher. Houston is not just losing Jonathan Greenard, but it remains to be seen what happens with longtime veteran Jerry Hughes, as well, so that type of role could make sense for Okwara.
San Francisco may not be able to spend a ton, but value players like Okwara make a ton of sense.
