There’s isn’t a magic bullet when it comes to draft strategy. You’re not going to be able to simply take one approach into draft day and dominate your year. The idea is to have multiple weapons in your arsenal, and a lot of this comes down to preparation.
One of the best steps in prep that you can take is dividing your position rankings into tiers. With a tier-based approach, you can see how each player stacks up at his respective position. Tiers are slightly different from rankings because it’s not just a straight list of players. These groupings allow for a more flexible approach to drafting that you can ultimately build into your draft board.
Over the next few days, I’m going to go position-by-position and give you my tiers for 2016 drafts. We’ll kick things off today with quarterbacks.
Tier 1 – Rounds 4-5
Cam Newton, Panthers
Russell Wilson, Seahawks
Aaron Rodgers, Packers
The top-tier quarterbacks are fairly straight-forward this year. Newton and Wilson finished one-two last year and remain elite fantasy options. Neither player put up prolific yardage totals, but both cracked the 30-touchdown plateau. These two also offer high ceilings on the ground, with Newton leading all quarterbacks in rushing yards and Wilson finishing second.
Rodgers had a down year in 2015, but still managed to finish eighth in fantasy scoring. Remarkably, Rodgers has ranked among the top two fantasy quarterbacks in six of the last eight seasons. With No. 1 wide receiver Jordy Nelson back in the mix for the Packers, Rodgers is a good bet to rebound this season.
Tier 2 – Rounds 6-7
