• Kayvon Thibodeaux delivers a career-best game: The 2022 fifth-overall pick delivers a three-sack game, taking advantage of a great matchup.
• Jaelan Phillips is all the way back: Phillips’ breakout season is back on as he regains his high-end snap share and delivers his second-straight game with the production IDP managers were hoping for coming into the year.
• A trade between Seattle and New York: Leonard Williams moved to Seattle this week in the midst of a strong season, he should be able to help the Seahawks defensive line.

Week 8 Takeaways
Be sure to check out last week’s waiver wire targets here as well.
Waiver wire
- ED Baron Browning, Denver Broncos: Browning has been making his mark since returning from injury and playing his first snaps of the year last week. Browning posted two sacks and six pressures this week after delivering four pressures on just 17 pass-rush attempts last week. Browning is currently working as a pass rush specialist for the Broncos but he has looked good doing so, making him an IDP option for deeper leagues.
- DT Cameron Heyward, Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers’ top interior defensive lineman appears likely to return this week, which makes him a player who needs to be rostered in DT-required IDP leagues. Heyward has been one of the most productive interior defensive linemen in the past few seasons.
- LB Jack Sanborn, Chicago Bears: Sanborn would play a full-time role if Tremaine Edmunds misses any time, making him a top waiver wire add with the assumption that Edmunds will miss at least one game.
- LB Markquese Bell, Dallas Cowboys: Bell played more snaps coming out of the team’s bye week after playing fewer than 55% of defensive snaps in every game prior. Bell could be a potential deep-league option going forward because he’s played really well, earning a 90.0 defensive grade (first at the position) and 89.7 coverage grade (fifth) this season.
- LB De’Vondre Campbell, Green Bay Packers: Campbell returned to the lineup for the first time since Week 3 and went on to lead the team in total tackles this week. Campbell is still playing slightly fewer snaps than Quay Walker but should be considered a solid starting IDP option in plenty of fantasy leagues.
- LB Jahlani Tavai, New England Patriots: Tavai increased his workload significantly with Ja’Whaun Bentley out of the game. Tavai would have value as more of an LB3 type in Week 9 should Bentley miss that game.
- LB Amari Burney, Las Vegas Raiders: Luke Masterson suffered an injury in the first half and did not return. The Raiders are already without Divine Deablo so the next man up turned out to be Amari Burney, who could be a potential add for deeper IDP leagues this week.
- LB Leo Chenal, Kansas City Chiefs: Willie Gay exited this week’s game due to a tailbone injury and did not return. Chenal is likely to see his snap share increase, though, not an every-down role so he can be added more for deeper leagues.
- S P.J. Locke, Denver Broncos: Kareem Jackson was suspended for two games after a hit to Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave in Week 7. Locke could be a fine one-week fill-in for deeper IDP leagues as an every-down player.
- S Keanu Neal/Damontae Kazee, Pittsburgh Steelers: Both Neal and Kazee played increased roles with Minkah Fitzpatrick out, as neither has been a full-time player with Fitzpatrick in the lineup. Neal should be the more prioritized player for fantasy managers looking to take advantage of his strong usage in the box.
- S Elijah Molden, Tennessee Titans: Molden stepped in as a full-time safety for the Titans with Kevin Byard shipped off to Philadelphia. Terrell Edmunds may see his workload increase as he gets more familiar with the team but Molden is the safer bet to trust at the moment.

Tyrel Dodson | 62.7% | 78.7% | 21.1% | 16.7% | 7 |
- Trending down: Tyrel Dodson emerged as the Bills' second linebacker this week, but it was not anywhere close to a full-time role, as the team opted to use a third safety (Taylor Rapp) on third and fourth downs versus a second linebacker. If this is going to be the scheme going forward, then Dodson will only be usable in the deepest IDP leagues.
- Droppable: It was short-lived for Dorian Williams as a full-time linebacker in Buffalo, but he can be safely dropped in redraft leagues that added him off the waiver wire a couple of weeks ago.

Taylor Rapp | 37.3% | 0.0% | 0.0% | 0.0% | 84.0% | 16.0% |
- Point of interest: Taylor Rapp’s usage as a dime safety for Buffalo, which spent 37% in dime personnel this week as their linebacker situation has become an issue. Buffalo had previously spent just 4.8% of its defensive snaps in dime leading into this week. Rapp isn’t an IDP option with that usage, but it has freed up Jordan Poyer to play slightly closer to the line of scrimmage, which could be a positive for Poyer in IDP leagues.

- Trending down: Nick Scott has been a difficult IDP asset to trust this season as his snaps have fluctuated on multiple occasions throughout the first seven games. He, once again, dipped below 70% of defensive snaps for the third time this season while the team appears to have him on a short leash. The Bengals have yet to turn over to Jordan Battle in a full-time role, but there are clearly some signs that the move may come at some point, making Scott a shaky IDP asset at best going forward.

This rotation hurts all Cleveland linebacker options for IDP purposes.

- Waiver wire: Markquese Bell played more snaps coming out of the team’s bye week after playing fewer than 55% of defensive snaps in every game prior. Bell could be a potential deep-league option going forward as he’s played really well, earning a 90.0 defensive grade (first at the position) and 89.7 coverage grade (fifth) this season.

- Point of interest: Since the Cowboys starting safeties have all been healthy, there has been a clear rotation to allow all three of them play significant snaps. Jayron Kearse is getting the most ideal usage but played the fewest amount of snaps from the group this week after he led the group in Week 6. There was also garbage time in this game as the Cowboys had a sizable lead. Overall, playing time will be the biggest detriment to each of Dallas’ safety options for IDP purposes going forward.

Browning posted two sacks and six pressures this week after delivering four pressures on just 17 pass-rush attempts last week. Browning is currently working as a pass rush specialist for the Broncos, but he has looked good doing so, making him an IDP option for deeper leagues.

Singleton had been one of the most efficient tacklers of the past few seasons by a large margin, but regression has finally caught up with him in 2023. While he’s still be above average in tackle efficiency for the year (14.4%), it isn’t near what he’s given IDP managers in years past.

This was a more difficult matchup for the Packers top edge rusher but his overall pass-rush metrics on the year and starter-level playing time is the main thing that will keep him in most IDP starting lineups going forward.

- Rookie watch: The Texans defensive line drew a positive matchup to get after the quarterback this week and while Jonathan Greenard delivered 2.5 sacks and Maliek Collins had two, Will Anderson is, unfortunately, still stuck on just one NFL sack this season, which he got back in Week 1.

- Trending up: Blake Cashman has been a top-five graded linebacker so far this season, but there were concerns about losing playing time with Denzel Perryman back in the mix this week. However, Cashman was the clear leader in snaps among the Texans linebackers, making him the safest bet for next week’s game.
- Trending down: Both Perryman and Henry To’oTo’o cannibalized each other’s snaps this week, which is a concern for both options going forward, despite Perryman still having a really productive game for IDP purposes.
- Droppable: For those that haven’t already, Christian Harris can be safely released to the waiver wire in most formats.

- Point of interest: Jaelan Phillips led the team’s edge defenders in snaps while leading the entire team in tackles (eight) and also landing a sack in this game. He is back to that top-end starter territory that we expected of him coming into the year.
- Trending down: Andrew Van Ginkel’s role diminished to just 14 total defensive snaps in this game, with 12 of them on the edge. He did not affect David Long’s playing time at off-ball linebacker either, which leaves him as the IDP to lose significant value after this game.

Lawrence also delivered an incredible 15 total pressures in this game,, which is the best mark in any game this year and the best mark in a game since 2014 when J.J. Watt was able to hit 15 against the Bills in Week 4 of that year.
- Point of interest: Leonard Williams was traded to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday which will open up more snaps for A’Shawn Robinson along the Giants defensive line.

- Trending down: Zach Cunningham was the lone every-down linebacker for the Eagles in Week 7 but saw his snap share decrease significantly in this game. Unfortunately, for IDP managers hoping to see an increase for Nakobe Dean, while he did play a season-high 50 snaps, that accounted for just a small percentage increase from last week’s 61%.

- Point of interest: Kevin Byard made his Eagles debut and stepped right into an every-down role for the team.
- Rookie watch: Eagles third-round rookie safety Sydney Brown played a new role this week as he worked primarily as the team’s nickel corner, which allowed him to be productive with eight tackles on the day. He’ll likely need to lock that role down full-time before IDP managers can consistently trust him in lineups.

- Waiver wire: Keanu Neal and Damontae Kazee both played increased roles with Fitzpatrick out as neither has been a full-time player with Fitzpatrick in the lineup. Neal should be the more prioritized player for fantasy managers looking to take advantage of his strong usage in the box.
