NFL Week 2: Fantasy IDP report

Chase Young with an impressive 2023 debut: The former second-overall pick put up strong pass-rush metrics and delivered for fantasy managers who were holding out hope for a return to form.

Budda Baker lands on injured reserve: With Baker out, K’Von Wallace saw one of the most IDP-friendly deployments in the league for safeties, making him a must-add for those that did not do so last week.

• The fall of Shaquille Leonard: The Indianapolis Colts’ former IDP superstar finds himself in a new reduced role in 2023.

Week 2 Takeaways

Waiver wire
  • LB Krys Barnes, Arizona Cardinals: With Josh Woods, who had been working as the Cardinals’ LB2 in Week 1, inactive for this game due to injury, Barnes absorbed those snaps, leading to a larger snap share next to Kyzir White. Barnes could be a viable option in deeper leagues if Woods continues to miss time.
  • LB Nate Landman, Atlanta Falcons: Troy Andersen is dealing with a concussion that allowed Landman to step into an every-down role. While he wasn’t overly productive this week, the snaps are there for that to improve should Andersen miss any more time.
  • LB Kamu Grugier-Hill, Carolina Panthers: With Shaq Thompson expected to miss time, Grugier-Hill would be the next man up. Grugier-Hill is likely to continue in a high-volume role with Thompson out indefinitely, making him worth adding in medium-deep leagues.
  • LB Nicholas Morrow, Philadelphia Eagles: Morrow took over the starting role with Nakobe Dean landing on injured reserve. Morrow was inefficient with his opportunities but after playing 95% of his team's defensive snaps, there will be more productive days that make him worthy of adding in most IDP leagues.
  • LB David Long, Miami Dolphins: Almost entirely dependant on Jaelan Phillips’ availability going forward, but the domino effect of Andrew Van Ginkel playing exclusively on the edge means that David Long took back the LB2 role. It feels unlikely that he would continue in that role should Phillips return in Week 3, potentially moving Van Ginkel back into the off-ball linebacker role and pushing Long back down the depth chart.
  • EDGE Jonathon Cooper, Denver Broncos: Frank Clark was out of this game and Cooper stepped into a much larger role for this Broncos’ defensive line. Cooper landed two sacks thanks to his playing time and high-end pass-rush metrics. Clark is expected to miss multiple weeks and Cooper could be an effective streaming option in the meantime.
  • EDGE Andrew Van Ginkel, Miami Dolphins: With Jaelan Phillips out of this game after picking up a late-week injury designation, Van Ginkel, who played almost exclusively as an off-ball linebacker last week, moved full-time to the edge in Phillips’ place this week. Van Ginkel played more than enough snaps to be IDP-relevant but he also posted a very strong pass-rush grade. If Phillips misses any more time then Van Ginkel would be worth adding as a potential replacement.
  • S Elijah Hicks, Chicago Bears: With Eddie Jackson out, Elijah Hicks stepped into an every-down role, playing almost exclusively deep. Hicks would be a deep league consideration should Jackson miss more time.
  • S Tracy Walker, Detroit Lions: C.J. Gardner-Johnson suffered a torn pectoral muscle and could be out for the rest of the season. Walker should step in as Gardner-Johnson’s immediate replacement.
  • S Adrian Amos, New York Jets: Tony Adams suffered a hamstring injury and did not return. Amos would be the next man up to target on waiver wires for deeper leagues.
  • S Terrell Edmunds, Philadelphia Eagles: Edmunds stepped in for an injured Reed Blankenship and played the larger snap share in the box among the Eagles’ safeties. With Blankenship’s status going forward in question Edmunds may be worth adding in deeper leagues as a speculative add for Week 3.
  • S Keanu Neal/Damontae Kazee, Pittsburgh Steelers: Minkah Fitzpatrick could miss time due to a chest injury, which should cause a ripple effect in favor of both Damontae Kazee and Keanu Neal. Both players were splitting time as the second safety next to Fitzpatrick but with him out, there is room for both players to step into full-time roles. Neal would be the preferred IDP target as he is most likely to continue playing a heavy amount of snaps in the box.
  • S Elijah Molden, Tennessee Titans: Amani Hooker is dealing with a concussion. If Hooker misses any more time, Molden could be worth adding in deeper leagues.

  • Trending up: Germaine Pratt’s snap share increased again this week. After playing 89.2% in Week 1, which was up from his 76% average in 2022, Pratt played all but four defensive snaps in this game. Pratt has a history of being a productive tackler and on a larger snap share would become a much more reliable IDP going forward.

  • Trending down: Shaquille Leonard did not increase his snap share after Week 1 (86%) and instead found himself in a new reduced role where he was replaced on the large majority of third and fourth downs by E.J. Speed. For what it’s worth, this doesn’t necessarily feel like a situation where Speed will overtake Leonard but instead, a situational deployment where Leonard handles early downs and Speed on passing downs. Speed can be added on waiver wires, but it’s worth waiting to see if his usage increases before starting him.

  • Waiver wire: With Jaelan Phillips out of this game after picking up a late-week injury designation, Andrew Van Ginkel, who played almost exclusively as an off-ball linebacker last week, moved full-time to the edge in Phillips’ place this week. Van Ginkel played more than enough snaps to be IDP-relevant but he also posted a very strong pass-rush grade. If Phillips misses any more time, then Van Ginkel would be worth adding as a potential replacement.

  • Waiver wire: Almost entirely dependant on Jaelan Phillips’ availability going forward, but the domino effect of Andrew Van Ginkel playing exclusively on the edge means that David Long took back the LB2 role. It feels unlikely that he would continue in that role should Phillips return in Week 3, potentially moving Van Ginkel back into the off-ball linebacker role and pushing Long back down the depth chart.

  • Injury: Marcus Davenport made his 2023 debut, but he only played four defensive snaps and was forced to leave the game early, as it was clear he wasn’t healthy and ready for NFL action yet. Davenport started and looked like he would play the second-most snaps after Hunter, but IDP managers will likely have to wait a bit longer before we see how useful of a fantasy asset he’ll be this year.

Metellus did leave this game due to an injury for a bit but did return. His usage in the slot is so encouraging that Minnesota wants to get him on the field after playing mostly in the box last week, the Vikings increasing Ivan Pace Jr.’s snaps left less opportunity there, but Metellus still got heavily involved.

  • Point of interest: Ja’Whaun Bentley has played 100% of available snaps in back-to-back games to start the year. He was typically an 80% player in 2022, so this could be the start of a new and improved role for 2023. Keeping in mind that Bill Belichick could choose to go back to his rotational ways at any point, this is at least a situation worth monitoring and could make Bentley a more reliable IDP going forward.

  • Point of interest: The Giants have been unable to land even a single sack through the first two games of the season. The disappointing pass-rush metrics from some of the starters on the edge have been part of the problem. IDP managers have high expectations for Kayvon Thibodeaux after seeing his early ADP in drafts this offseason, so the hope is that he’ll hit his stride here shortly.

  • Point of interest: Haason Reddick didn’t record a single fantasy stat in Week 2 despite playing 67% of the team’s defensive snaps. Reddick recorded just one pressure this week after posting five last week. He was not a strong tackler last season but is worth monitoring his pass-rush metrics. While it wasn’t a great outing, of course, it’s not quite time to panic just yet for a player who has a history of being incredibly productive over the past three seasons.

Mario Goodrich took over Maddox’s slot role but until we know Maddox’s status, isn’t worth adding in most leagues.

While still not an every-down role, it’s nice to see that below that 80% threshold isn’t the norm. It is still worth monitoring going forward as these snaps may fluctuate from week to week.

  • Injury: Minkah Fitzpatrick suffered a chest injury in the second half and was quickly ruled out.
  • Waiver wire: If Fitzpatrick is going to miss any time, then a ripple effect in favor of both Damontae Kazee and Keanu Neal should happen. Both players were splitting time as the second safety next to Fitzpatrick but with him out, there is room for both players to step into full-time roles. Neal would be the preferred IDP target as he is most likely to continue playing a heavy amount of snaps in the box.

  • Trending up: Jordyn Brooks greatly increased his snap share from Week 1 (64.2%) with Devin Bush also out of the lineup. Brooks continues to look healthy and has been incredibly productive through the first two games of the season. He should be rostered in almost all IDP leagues at this point.

  • Point of interest: Julian Love has played a significant role for the Seahawks while Jamal Adams has been out. Adams could be close to returning, which could eat into Love’s snaps, or at least his box snap share while Adams is eased back into action. This will be a situation worth monitoring once Adams is active.

  • Point of interest: Joe Tryon-Shoyinka earned the highest pass-rush grade of his NFL career in this game, which helped land him two sacks. Tryon-Shoyinka is in Year 3, so an 81.8 pass-rush grade being his best so far isn’t overly encouraging after a 55.9 last week, but he’s at least worth monitoring now to see if he can string together some better performances.

  • Point of interest: Chase Young made his 2023 debut and looked much more like the second-overall pick from a few seasons ago. Young posted high-end pass-rush metrics, played a full workload and landed 1.5 sacks on the day. Many had counted Young out after back-to-back injury-plagued seasons but with more games like this and by staying healthy, he should quickly find himself back in the good graces of IDP managers.
