NFL Week 16: Fantasy IDP utilization report

Santa Clara, California, USA; Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young (99) reacts after a play during the second quarter against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

  • Chase Young is back: After a very lengthy absence, Young returned and his impact was felt as Washington’s highest-graded defender in Week 16.
  • More shenanigans in Cleveland: None of the Browns linebackers should be trusted in the fantasy championship round, as the confusing rotation returned this week.
  • Mr. Efficiency: Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton has been the most effective tackler this season, and he’s doing it on less than a full-time role, making him an outlier who should still be treated as a top option for IDP purposes.
Estimated reading time: 37 minutes

WEEK 16 TAKEAWAYS

Waiver Wire
  • LB – Luke Masterson, LV – With Denzel Perryman expected to miss the remainder of the season, Masterson is one of the few Raiders linebackers left standing and should play a near-every-down role going forward.
  • LB – Kaden Elliss, NO – Pete Werner landed back on injured reserve, which pushed Elliss back into the Saints' secondary linebacker role.
  • EDGE – Cameron Sample, CIN – Sample got significant playing time with the starters not healthy. He’ll have a shot for some volume-based production in the final weeks of the season.
  • EDGE – Carl Granderson, NO – Granderson took over as a starting edge and has been decently productive since doing so, making him a solid streaming option in the final two weeks, if needed.
  • EDGE – Chase Young, WAS – Young finally returned and finished Week 16 as Washington’s highest-graded defender despite not landing a sack. He has high-ceiling potential if he gets a full-time workload to close out the year.
  • S – Alohi Gilman, LAC – With Derwin James in the concussion protocol, Gilman would act as his immediate replacement, but there are likely better IDP options available to replace James for Week 16, if needed.
  • S – Damontae Kazee, PIT – With Terrell Edmunds injured, Kazee stepped into a starting role and could have use in deeper leagues.
  • S – Jeremy Reaves, WAS – Kamren Curl is dealing with an ankle injury which opened up a box-heavy role for Reaves who will have a decent shot to put up some tackle production if Curl continues to miss time.

The Falcons defense is typically efficient for linebacker production, so he could be a decent desperation play in Week 17, if needed.

  • DOWNGRADE: Trey Hendrickson is playing with a club on his hand due to a broken wrist, and it appears that his playing time is also taking a hit as a result. He will be difficult to trust in the fantasy championship round this coming week due to his diminished playing time.
  • WAIVER-WIRE: Cameron Sample made the waiver list last week but ran away with the available playing time left to him by Hendrickson and Sam Hubbard. This led Sample to a sack and six total tackles. He could have some use in deep leagues where edge help is needed.

  • POINT OF INTEREST: Deion Jones dropped to the Browns' third linebacker role this week after leading the team in each of the past two weeks. Reggie Ragland emerged out of nowhere to out-snap Jones while Tony Fields got significantly more playing time this week. This group should just be avoided for the rest of the season, as it is way too volatile to trust at such a crucial time of the year.
