• Sack regression affecting Alex Highsmith’s ceiling: But IDP managers should take solace in his career-best pass-rush metrics in trusting that the production will soon follow.
• Another defensive lineman suffering from year-to-year regression: Daron Payne has been especially ineffective as a pass rusher this season and there isn’t a lot of encouraging metrics to suggest he’ll be much better for the rest of this season.
• The loss of a top-tier IDP asset: Miami Dolphins edge rusher Jaelan Phillips tore his Achilles tendon and is done for the year, robbing IDP managers of a locked-in fantasy starter.

Week 12 Takeaways
Be sure to check out last week’s waiver wire targets here as well.
Waiver wire
- ED Ogbo Okoronkwo/Za’Darius Smith, Cleveland Browns: Should Myles Garrett miss time, expect both Okoronkwo and Smith to carry much of the load in his absence, which would make them more trustworthy for IDP starting lineups for those in need as injuries begin to pile up at this key position.
- ED Andrew Van Ginkel, Miami Dolphins: Van Ginkel should play a lot more on the edge for the rest of this season with Jaelan Phillips out, making him a top-edge target in most leagues.
- LB Derrick Barnes/Jack Campbell, Detroit Lions: Barnes has been playing over Jack Campbell as of late and is the likely next man up to lead the Lions linebackers in total snaps with Alex Anzalone expected to miss time. Campbell should also see an increased role.
- LB E.J. Speed, Indianapolis Colts: With the release of Shaquille Leonard last week, Speed stepped into a near-every-down role in the Colts defense. This should make him one of the top waiver wire targets this week where he is available.
- LB Nicholas Morrow/Christian Elliss, Philadelphia Eagles: Morrow stepped into a full-time role with Zach Cunningham out of the game and Nakobe Dean already on injured reserve. Morrow can be started in most leagues if Cunningham misses time. Deeper leagues can consider Christian Elliss who will likely play a part-time role.
- LB Cody Barton, Washington Commanders: Barton returned from injured reserve and immediately stepped back into his full-time role with the team, though, wasn’t especially productive for IDP purposes. An every-down role will be key for him to have better fantasy performances going forward.
- S Alex Cook, Carolina Panthers: Cook took over for Vonn Bell, after he left the game with a shoulder injury, and can be added in deeper leagues should Bell miss any time.

- Point of interest: Josh Woods played the every-down role that we expected him to play with Kyzir White landing on injured reserve, unfortunately, his production was a letdown in comparison to what White was able to deliver for IDP managers. There should be better days ahead for Woods, as long as he maintains that every-down role.

- Trending down: After two straight games with a near-every-down role, Nate Landman’s playing time dropped just below three-quarters of defensive snaps. Landman has had this sort of fluctuation throughout the season and bounced back to playing full-time, but it does seem to be a game-by-game situation with the Falcons coaching staff in how they deploy him, which will make him difficult to trust on a consistent basis.

- Trending down: Richie Grant has lost playing time to DeMarcco Hellams, seemingly due to poor play as he’s earned some poor grades on the year, including a 47.8 coverage grade which currently ranks 91st among 95 qualifying safeties. There will be plenty of other safeties to look at for IDP lineups, assuming this role continues to not be a full-time job for Grant.

- Point of interest: Trey Hendrickson got another sack in this game, as expected in the IDP rankings article this past week, bringing him up to 10.5 on the year. Hendrickson has now been in on at least a half-sack in every game but two this year.
- Rookie watch: First-round pick Myles Murphy also notched his second sack of the season despite limited playing time all year long. He also earned the best pass-rush grade of his young NFL career (86.1) in this game.

- Injury: Myles Garrett suffered a shoulder injury in this game and is considered day-to-day after testing showed no major damage. Garrett has been having a Defensive Player of the Year type of season and a locked-in elite fantasy option for IDP so hopefully he doesn’t miss much time, if any at all.
- Waiver wire: Should Garrett miss time, expect both Ogbo Okoronkwo and Za’Darius Smith to carry much of the load in his absence which would make them more trustworthy for IDP starting lineups for those in need, as injuries are beginning to pile up at this key position.

These were Hankins’ first two sacks of the season and is not a true pass-rush threat for IDP managers to chase next week, on top of the low playing time, he can be safely let on waiver wires.

- Waiver wire: Derrick Barnes has been playing over Jack Campbell as of late and is the likely next man up to lead the Lions linebackers in total snaps while Campbell should also see an increased role.

- Point of interest: Blake Cashman and Christian Harris have both been the clear full-time linebackers for the Texans these past two games with Denzel Perryman suspended. Perryman is expected back in Week 13 and could factor into one of Harris or Cashman’s playing time. This would be a situation worth avoiding if possible next week until we can see how the usage plays out.

- Point of interest: Baker Mayfield had previously done a nice job avoiding sacks for most of this season with one of the five best pressure-to-sack conversion rates (14.0%) in the league, until this past week where the Colts landed a season-high six sacks. Mayfield’s pressure-to-sack conversion rate this week was a very high 60.0% as Samson Ebukam and company made his day miserable.

- Injury: Jaelan Phillips tore his Achilles in this game and is out for the year. Phillips had a strong game this week and had been doing so whenever he was in the lineup this season, so his loss is a huge blow to IDP lineups.
- Waiver wire: Andrew Van Ginkel should play a lot more on the edge for the rest of this season with Phillips out, making him a top edge target in most leagues.

Highsmith has also delivered a career-high 16.7% win rate and 14.0% pressure rate. After landing 14.5 sacks last season, Highsmith was due for regression, but if this keeps up the rest of this season, we can expect the sack numbers to shift in his favor again in 2024.

One of the bigger surprises for Payne this season is that his pass-rush metrics have dropped to a career-low, including a 54.7 pass-rush grade. Payne is more of a volume-dependant producer for IDP purposes going forward.

- Waiver wire: Cody Barton returned from injured reserve and immediately stepped back into his full-time role with the team, though, he wasn’t especially productive for IDP purposes. An every-down role will be key for him to have better fantasy performances going forward.
- Trending down: Jamin Davis dropped back down to a part-time role after holding down the team’s lone every-down linebacker role while Barton was on injured reserve. Davis is not necessarily in starting consideration for most leagues going forward.
