Week 8 NFL injuries that matter for fantasy

DENVER, CO - OCTOBER 15: Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders #10 of the Denver Broncos walks off the field after sustaining an injury in the third quarter of a game against the New York Giants at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on October 15, 2017 in Denver, Colorado. Staying on top of injuries throughout the week, and especially on Sunday mornings, is one of the easiest ways to maintain an edge in fantasy football. Outside of, you know, just making sure you don’t have inactive players in your starting lineup, it’s important to understand how one injury can greatly impact the fantasy potential of other skill position players within a game.

Lucky for you, this weekly series is here to help. Rather than just frantically refreshing each team’s injury report, I’ll do the heavy lifting each Saturday night and update injuries and provide analysis once inactives are released and early game-time decisions finalized on Sunday mornings.

Updates/Analysis

Marquise Goodwin, WR, San Francisco 49ers – Active – Goodwin will play today, and draws a favorable matchup against a Philadelphia defense allowing the most fantasy points per game to outside wide receivers, which is where Goodwin runs 78 percent of his routes.

Danny Amendola, WR, New England Patriots – Active – Amendola is active, and draws a Chargers defense surrendering the fourth-most fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers out of the slot. 92 percent of Amendola’s targets have come from the slot this season.

Melvin Gordon, RB, Los Angeles Chargers – Active – Gordon is active and draws a dream matchup against New England. Gordon ranks eighth among running backs in carries and sixth in targets, while the Patriots rank fourth-worst in yards per carry allowed (4.76), and are also allowing the second-most receiving fantasy points per game (15.8) to opposing running backs. Unfortunately for Gordon, his foot is “an issue”. He’s a must-start in redraft leagues, and boom-or-bust DFS play.
