With Week 1 fast approaching, we’re winding down our mock draft series here at PFF Fantasy. Our latest mock draft was a 12-team IDP league with PPR scoring. Each franchise was given 24 roster spots, with 15 starters:
Total Starters: | 15 |
Number of Starting QBs: | 1 |
Number of Starting RBs: | 2 |
Number of Starting WRs: | 2 |
Number of Starting TEs: | 1 |
Number of Starting PKs: | 1 |
Number of Starting DT+DEs: | 2-3 |
Number of Starting LBs: | 3-4 |
Number of Starting CB+Ss: | 2-3 |
Total Number of Starting Individual Defensive Players: | 8 |
For those new to IDP, the three scoring formats commonly used are tackle-heavy, big-play, and balanced. For this draft we used balanced scoring settings:
Fumble Recoveries | 4 points |
Forced Fumbles | 4 points |
Interceptions Caught | 5 points |
Passes Defensed | 1.5 points |
Blocked Field Goals | 3 points |
Blocked Punts | 3 points |
Blocked Extra Points | 1 point |
Tackles | 2 points |
Assists | .75 points |
Sacked a QB | 4 points |
Tackles for a Loss | 2 points |
Safeties | 10 points |
Defensive & Special Teams TDs | 6 points |
Compared to the standard team defense/special teams, in IDP you really can’t help but come away with a deeper knowledge of the parts that comprise each defensive unit across the league. That, in turn, helps bolster our lineup decisions on the other side of the ball, as we develop a better sense of which individual defensive matchups are better to attack or avoid (hence why the weekly WR-CB matchup chart has become so popular amongst PFF subscribers).
This draft happened to feature some of the most accurate IDP heavyweights in the industry, including our own Jeff Ratcliffe, Pat Thorman, and Walton Spurlin. Joining us were Gary Davenport of Fantasy Sharks and 4for4’s Mike Woellert.
One final note: you can find a glossary with acronyms for all of PFF’s signature stats here. Below is a quick key with a few of the unique defensive metrics we’ll be referencing.
TPOP: tackles per opportunity
QBP: qb pressure frequency
SKCON: sacks converted
%TA: percent targeted on cover snaps
POB: plays on ball

2.12 | Daniel Kelley | Hopkins, DeAndre HOU WR |
Notes: There were few surprises at the top of the draft. In fact, the first several rounds in an IDP draft are often indistinguishable from traditional formats… Woellert took Leonard Fournette with the first pick of the second round, and while that may be about a round earlier than Fournette’s current 3.04 ADP according to Fantasy Football Calculator, the Jaguars’ rookie likely would have been gone by the time Woellert was back on the clock with pick 3.12. It’s a good reminder that if you really like a certain player, there’s no shame in pulling the trigger a tad early to ensure he ends up on your roster. Just do your homework and keep your draft sheet current with rankings and ADPs, because there is a point where reaching diminishes returns… The early rounds of this draft took place before the injury to Julian Edelman, with Brandin Cooks now going toward the middle of the second round, compared to the Round 2/3 turn about a week ago.

4.11 | Tyler Loechner | Reed, Jordan WAS TE |
4.12 | Daniel Kelley | Snead, Willie NOS WR |
Notes: Ezekiel Elliott fell to Daniel Kelley at pick 3.01, which is more palatable than his current 2.05 ADP. We still don’t have any certainty on how the appeal process may delay or drag out (or reduce) Elliott’s impending six-game suspension… Another fading star, Sammy Watkins, went to Pat Thorman at 4.02, which isn’t far off from his peak 3.09 ADP toward the end of July. I still love Watkins’ talent, but this felt like a bit of a reach given his current 5.10 ADP in standard leagues in the wake of his trade to the Rams… The fourth round saw our first two quarterbacks off the board in Aaron Rodgers (4.04) and Tom Brady (4.07). Even with six points per passing TD, no one wanted to be the first to blink and take a QB in the first few rounds, continuing the trend from other mocks… The fourth round also saw a few solid value buys at RB in Dalvin Cook (4.05), Carlos Hyde (4.06) and Ameer Abdullah (4.10), three guys who will get a lot of usage.

Notes: I liked how Tyler Loechner approached his draft slot from the 1.2 slot. After starting off with David Johnson, Loechner then prioritized pass catchers and followed up with Cooks, Keenan Allen, Jordan Reed, Martavis Bryant, and Kelvin Benjamin. He was still able to find some decent options at RB in the middle rounds before moving on to defense… J.J. Watt was the first defensive player off the board, going to Walton Spurlin at 5.03. Watt is easily the top DL option and arguably the top overall IDP pick, although the fifth round is a little early (to me) to start taking defensive players… With that said, I took the second defensive player and drafted Luke Kuechly at 7.06, which is also still considered early. The concussions remain a concern, but frankly I didn’t love any of the available options at this point in the draft and didn’t want to chase an offensive position with a lower-tiered player. So I opted to get a leg up on the other side of the ball and land a top-tier option at the linebacker position, which remained untapped up to that point in the draft… At 7.10, Davenporty nabbed Tampa Bay’s Kwon Alexander, who was second only to Bobby Wagner in fantasy scoring among LBs last season and ranked fourth in QB pressure rate (31.91).

Notes: Round 9 effectively opened the flood gates at linebacker, the most coveted of the IDP positions with three starting spots designated for each roster. IDP pundits often advise to fill out your starting offense before honing in on the other side of the ball. Of the 24 selections made between Rounds 9 and 10, 11 went to defense, and all but two of those picks were linebackers… A case could be made for each of these picks, but I particularly liked the value that Daniel Kelley got with NaVorro Bowman , who led all LBs in fantasy scoring in 2015 before a torn Achilles limited his 2016 campaign to just four games… At 10.04, Ratcliffe took Pittsburgh LB Ryan Shazier, who tied Kuechly with 0.31 fantasy points per opportunity last season, which ranked third among LBs… Tyler Loechner dubbed his selection of Deion Jones as the LB11 at pick 10.11 “a steal,” considering Jones finished his rookie year as fantasy’s LB12 and returned two interceptions for touchdowns… I went with Khalil Mack at 10.07. The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year tied for fourth last season in Plays on Ball (25) and has notched 26 sacks over the last two seasons.

Notes: The defensive picks continued to fly off the board in the early-double-digit rounds, and here we saw a run on defensive ends in particular. Upon switching back to a 4-3 defensive end from a 3-4 linebacker under Chip Kelly, Brandon Graham was rated by our Sam Monson as the No. 9 overall player across the league this past season after ranking second among all defenders in both pressures (83) and pressure rate (once every 5.8 pass-rushing snaps). Jeff was able to scoop him up at pick 12.04 as the DE8 in our draft, which is quite the value… Telvin Smith has been a top-five fantasy LB each of the last two seasons and has finished no worse than the LB12 his rookie year in 2014. For Pat Thorman to draft him as the LB17 at the end of the 11th round feels like theft… My pick, Calais Campbell, has been one of the most consistent interior defensive linemen and last year trailed only Sheldon Richardson in fantasy scoring… Here we see some of the domino effect of that IDP run that started a few rounds prior. Jeff struck again by snagging Darren McFadden at 13.09, a whole seven rounds later than his current 6.09 ADP in standard league drafts.

Notes: Outside linebacker Vic Beasley went to Daniel Kelley at 14.12, a handful of picks before I was eyeing him up at 15.06. Beasley is coming off a league-high 15.5 sacks to go with six forced fumbles and a touchdown return in his second season, earning first-team All-Pro honors in the process. One concern for sustainability is that Beasley ranked only 80th among LBs in QB pressure rate but was eighth in SKCON (sacks converted)… Lavonte David went to Scott Barrett at 14.06 as the LB23. David also ranked inside the top-10 in sacks converted but dropped to 19th in fantasy scoring among LBs, one year after finishing as the No. 2 fantasy linebacker in 2015 with 242 points. I thought Scott got nice value there landing David at his floor… I wound up taking Packers’ safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in the 15th, giving me two of the first four safeties off the board after grabbing Titans’ new strong safety Jonathan Cyprien a couple of rounds earlier.

Notes: Notable names still dot our draft board well into the later rounds…One of those names, Aaron Donald, was PFF’s best pass-rusher from 2016 and our overall top player entering the 2017 season.
Of course, by selecting him at pick 17.06, I’m more or less calling his bluff and hoping he ends his holdout by the start of the regular season. The risk felt worth it for fantasy’s No. 2 DL in 2015 and No. 10 finisher last season, although it’s probably not a pick I make 10 times out of 10 (fun fact I couldn’t pass up: Donald’s 6.1 pressure rate would’ve been seventh-best among edge rushers)… The 18th round saw Tyler Buecher land Paul Posluszny, the No. 11 fantasy LB from 2016, while others went chasing sacks from the likes of Jerry Hughes (18.03), Cameron Wake (19.05) and Justin Houston (19.06).

Similar to Lewis, Chris Hogan went to Scott Barrett at 21.07, while Daniel Kelley took Danny Amendola at 23.01. Both players offer potentially strong return on investment in the wake of Julian Edelman’s season-ending injury… Barrett also got great value in the final round with Eagles’ safety Malcolm Jenkins, who is just one year removed from finishing behind only Reshad Jones as the No. 2 fantasy DB in 2015.
