- Good at covering up and stopping the rush of defensive ends when his body is in the correct position to block.
- Took a step forward in pass protection in 2016.
- Competed against top-end defensive talent
Biggest concern:
- Too wide of a base at times and cannot change directions easily.
- Has trouble getting his body in position to make blocks.
- Bit stiff lower body and has trouble moving in space.
- Susceptible to getting beat by speed rushers.
- Struggled in the run game in his two years as starter.
Bottom line: Sharpe certainly passes the eye test, but he has a lot of work to do on the field. He has a great body frame and size for a tackle, and that will likely entice coaches and scouts. While he improved his game in 2016, he could probably use another season to refine his game and play up to his potential. On film you see glimpses of big-time play but you also see below-average tackle play and struggles to move in space at times. He is susceptible to giving up the edge on a speed rush as well as losing balance in run blocks. These inconsistencies in his performance make him purely a potential and upside prospect. In PFF’s grading system Sharpe was not productive and has a lot of work to do to progress into an eventual starter. However, a team may see his size and athleticism and believe they can turn him into a player.
