In one of the more shocking matchups of week 1, the Miami Dolphins hammered the New England Patriots with the run and beat an unsuspecting Patriots team pretty thoroughly. It’s not often that Bill Belichick gets outcoached but it certainly seemed to be the case in week 1.
Beyond the coaching, the Patriots offensive line got pummeled for 60 minutes on Sunday. Tom Brady was under duress all game. The running game struggled to get any type of rhythm because the offensive line was getting punished on both the interior and exterior. Is this something that we can look forward to all season from the New England line or is this something that we can attribute more to a terrific Miami front four?
According to our Pro Football Focus stats, the Dolphins racked up 4 QB sacks, 7 hits, and 18 (!) hurries. The defensive line accounted for 11 stops, 7 of which came from the starters. Reserve defensive tackle Earl Mitchell had 3. Tom Brady and every Patriots offensive linemen graded negatively in this game. The stats say that this Patriots o-line was awful in pass protection but played better in the run game. Only right guard Jordan Devey graded negatively in the run game. But what does the film say?
