- Blair Kerkhoff of kansascity.com wrote on Monday that Kansas City Chiefs running back CJ Spiller has impressed during camp and could find himself on the Chief’s final 53-man roster possibly even as the team’s third running back. Spiller signed a free agent contract with the Chiefs this offseason joining a crowded group featuring Spencer Ware, Charcandrick West, and third round draft pick Kareem Hunt. Spiller turned 30 earlier this month.
- In large part due to injuries, Spiller has only played 449 total snaps over the past three seasons. Spiller has performed poorly over the stretch with his highest grade of 52.9 coming in 2015.
- Spiller has shown in the past that he has serious ability and currently owns the third highest graded season for a running back in PFF history (2006-2016) with a grade of 95.0 in 2012. That year Spiller had a league high elusive rating, which measures the effectiveness of a runner beyond the help of his blockers through missed tackle rate and yards after contact, of 94.6 which has only been beaten one other time since (min 180 carries).
