Notes
- Adding Steve Johnson to the mix at wide receiver was a smart addition for the Chargers' offense, giving them another talented pass-catcher to go along with Keenan Allen and Malcolm Floyd. Despite only lasting one year in San Francisco, Johnson actually had a fairly impressive 2014 season, particularly through the first seven weeks where he was our fourth-highest graded player at the position.
- You could argue that with Danny Woodhead and Brandon Oliver, they didn't need to address the running back position this offseason, but while both are good players, they are better suited as third-down and change-of-pace backs. Drafting Melvin Gordon in the first round gives them the true runner that they were lacking, and if he can be as impressive as his time in college suggests, he'll really help the Chargers on first and second down in particular.
- It's been a concern for a while now, but the Chargers have serious issues up front on their defensive line. Of the five players we've seen enough to form a true opinion of, only Corey Liuget is good enough to earn a rating of average or better. The biggest concern is at Kendall Reyes' spot, with the former second-round pick grading at -21.3 on 661 snaps in 2014, the second season in a row where he finished with a grade below -20.0.
- As worrying as things are up front, there is cause for optimism in the defensive backfield. Brandon Flowers is still a good cornerback, with Eric Weddle remains one of the premier safeties in the NFL. There's genuine excitement in San Diego about last season's first-rounder Jason Verrett, with two huge games in the first six weeks of the season standing out. He missed the second half of 2014 through injury, but his development will be one to watch this season.
