The Pro Football Focus Friends and Family Dynasty League is composed of 12 current and former PFF staffers. We go deep with 53 roster spots, 18 starters, and a full slate of individual defensive players. The league operates under an otherwise normal scoring system and roster requirements aside from half-PPR.
Now that we’ve got the nuts and bolts out of the way, let’s start digging into this year’s draft. The league is fairly active (eight trades during the draft), so I will include each owner’s name next to each pick. After each round, I’ll add my takeaways and the reasoning behind my pick. I’ll break down all of the trades (six deals before the end of Round 1) completed during my recap of the round it was completed during. But first I want to give a quick analysis of my overall strategy going into the draft.
My strategy
The 2015 was an awful one for me in this league. I lost Jamaal Charles and others to injuries, and Odell Beckham Jr. was (somehow) not enough to carry me to the postseason. In 2014, I made the playoffs as one of the top three seeds, so I wasn’t ready to hit the panic button. Having said that, I entered the rookie draft awfully thin at the wide receiver position. My goal was to leverage my early draft position — selecting with the third pick in every round but one — to trade for an undervalued veteran wide receiver. I also wanted to restock through the draft, of course, but I find that targeting value (best player available) is a better long-term strategy than targeting need. I also decided to lean toward drafting offensive players with any close decision. In past seasons, some of my most productive IDP have been free-agent acquisitions.
