How long will the top fantasy QBs be fantasy starters?

It’s not fantasy draft season. Not yet, not for most fantasy players. But for many, it’s time to think about keepers. If you’re in a keeper league, one of your biggest offseason decisions is who will be sticking around for the season to come — and in many cases, beyond that.

So, over the next few weeks, a few of the PFF Fantasy writers and I are playing a little game when it comes to keeper decisions.

The premise: You can keep Player X for as long as you want, but you have to decide on that duration right now.

The cost: You can keep the player indefinitely at the cost of the last starter at the position. So a quarterback will cost you the draft slot of the 10th quarterback off the board, while a wide receiver will cost you the 20th receiver. In short, the question at hand is: How long will Player X be a fantasy starter?

With those rules in place, I solicited the input of three PFF Fantasy writers: Brandon Marianne Lee (@BrandonHerFFB), Michael Moore (@PFF_Moore), and Dan Schneier (@DanSchneierNFL). They gave their answers for a list of names, along with a short explanation.

Today, we’ll hit the quarterbacks. Over the next few weeks, we’ll visit the other skill positions. Explanations are below, and at the bottom you'll find a chart with everyone's answers:

Tom Brady, New England Patriots

(Age at start of 2017 season: 40; 2016 statistics: 12 games, 3,554 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, 64 rushing yards, 0 rushing touchdowns, fantasy QB16)

5 years: Brady has told owner Robert Kraft he wants to play another six to seven years. With the way he plays the position within the Patriots' offensive scheme combined with his conditioning, I don't doubt he can. — Dan Schneier

1 year: It's unheard of for a player, even a quarterback, to even be playing, much less as effectively as Brady has, at 40. I wouldn't want to commit too far ahead with that. — Michael Moore
