Name: Tyler Orlosky

School: West Virginia

Position: Center

Stats to know: Orlosky yielded only three hurries and one QB hit as a pass protector in 2016. Orlosky has had three years of strong grading and has been charged with only one sack.

What he does best:

  • Does a good job of working hips into blocks. Technique can be effective in reaching defensive tackles if his body can get in position (hasn’t had to show this often).
  • Good use of controlling blocks with hands (tight and inside).
  • Does not lose a lot of blocks. One of the lowest percentage of negative grades among centers over the last three years.
  • Good compact body and solid pass protector.
  • Gets in good position off the snap.

Biggest concern:

  • Didn’t have variety in blocks he was asked to execute. West Virginia scheme kept block difficulty simple for the center.
  • Observation of Orlosky running in space was not impressive.
  • May be limited to more downhill schemes at the next level.
  • Inability to change directions easily on the move.

Bottom line: Orlosky shows strong hands and good ability to “steer” blockers and this may help him in some pass protection situations, however there are still questions in the run game. He won’t wow scouts by creating huge holes at the point of attack, but Orlosky is usually in good position and rarely gets beaten cleanly off the snap. While he’s not most physically imposing center, Orlosky should have a role at the next level.
