PFF scouting report: Montravius Adams, DI, Auburn

Name: Montravius Adams

School: Auburn

Position fit: Lined up at 0, 3 and 5 technique, suits a team that plays left and right DTs

Stats to know: Registered 13 sacks, 17 hits and 57 hurries in three years.

What he does best:

  • Exceptional instincts, displays good awareness to find the football.
  • Understands when to disengage, keeping his body free to make plays.
  • Displays high effort, chasing plays downfield.
  • Playmaker when given a solo chance heads up, might be best at 0 or 2 technique.
  • Put a number of highlight-reel tackles-for-loss on tape.
  • Able to recognize and react to attempted reach blocks.
  • Impressive change-of-direction ability, can arrest momentum in the backfield to make stops.
  • Explosive first step, fires off the ball consistently.
  • Exploits quickness with an array of finesse techniques including a rare but wicked spin move.
  • Able to penetrate double teams with his sharpness off the ball.
  • Versatility to play a number of positions.

Biggest concern:

  • Fails to display the consistent ability to anchor against double teams, might not be strong enough to play NT.
  • Doesn’t display the requisite power to collapse the pocket as a bull rusher.
  • Susceptible to trap blocks because of his upfield aggression.
  • Not nearly as effective as a pass-rusher in 2015. Doesn’t always play up to his talent level.

Player comparison: Jurrell Casey, Tennessee Titans

Adams shares a few similarities with the Titans’ Casey. He has the positional versatility to play a number of techniques up front, showing his suitability to a diverse scheme. Adams is also capable of both rushing the passer and defending the run, even though he might not be an elite prospect.

Bottom line: Adams continues the strong tradition of defensive line prospects produced in the SEC. They certainly have a tough apprenticeship in the division. In this particular case, Adams intrigues because of his versatility, both in terms of position and skillset. The explosion the Auburn prospect possesses is indicative of NFL upside, not to mention the strength to wreck running games in the backfield. Although his best position might be hard to pinpoint, Adams has the raw tools to develop into a valuable contributor in a variety of roles as a pro.
