PFF scouting report: Jehu Chesson, WR, Michigan

Name: Jehu Chesson

School: Michigan

Position fit: Outside wide receiver or potentially a “big slot”

Stats to know: Dropped only two of his 35 catchable targets in 2016.

What he does best:

  • Has a big frame and can effectively shield the ball away from defenders at the catch point on short and intermediate passes and in the middle of the field.
  • Can leap and make athletic diving catches downfield on passes thrown slightly in front of him.
  • Presents a big target in the end zone for quarterbacks due to his size.
  • Can line up all over the field, even lined up in a three-point stance as a tight end, and run any type of route.
  • Physical at the point of catch and can absorb big hits from defenders right as he makes a reception and still hold on to the football.
  • Solid blocker who went up against linebackers on run plays and executed a wide variety of blocks including crack blocks and cut blocks

Biggest concern:

  • Body catches the majority of passes, which decreases his catch radius as he’s unconfident to catch passes outside of his frame.
  • Rarely goes beyond first contact after receptions as he forced only one missed tackle on 35 receptions in 2016.
  • Does not run crisp routes and often gives away his route early.
  • Often played off the line of scrimmage and therefore did not face a lot of press coverage.

Bottom line: Chesson’s big frame certainly makes him valuable for an NFL franchise; however, it is unlikely he will be worth an early draft pick since his skill set is limited beyond that and his ceiling is not very high. He can contribute the most by moving the chains with some unspectacular receptions if he gets to play with an accurate quarterback who can hit his frame. In addition, Chesson’s run-blocking is a valuable asset and can create another way in which he can contribute in the NFL.
